Anti-war clergy less visible for many reasons
http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/news/editorial/14840633.htm

The clergy are out there. Sometimes squelched, ignored, tardy or intimidated, but priests, ministers, rabbis and other religious leaders are more apt to challenge the Iraq war, its rationale and its horrible consequences than any other professional group.

When Helen Thomas recalled the Rev. William Sloane Coffin's activist voice during the Vietnam War and bemoaned the absence of comparable religious leaders today, she was speaking for all of us.

In this time of death-dealing war policies with duplicitous justifications, where is such moral leadership?

1. this is a very telling paragraph...
''Second, a silent clergy is in part a consequence of an intimidated media. Religious voices on the extreme right are played up; they follow the Bush line. When "Justice Sunday," managed by the Family Foundation, was matched by an alternative "Faith and Freedom" rally with a standing-room-only crowd, the cameras went elsewhere. Coverage served power, not moral protest.''

2. When people complain that we aren't putting forward
our message I tell them we are but cannot get media coverage. We can't get the NBC affiliate to cover rallies by progressive groups. CBS and ABC are better.

4. cbs and abc are better -- but the implication that more weight --
more authenticity is the conservative christian corner is always there in the reporting.

3. Besides The Media Refusal to Cover Antiwar Clergy...
...most believe with all their hearts the words of Jesus who said:

"...Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; 6 they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; 7they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them 'Rabbi...."
... 13. Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You devour widows' houses and for a show make lengthy prayers..."

I would also say this is true of Hindus, Muslems and Buddhists ~ it is unseemly to be a braggert.

And they have been out there working for true justice for years right under your noses, but they are either treated as kooks, minimized, or ignored. I have seen it with my own eyes and know of the good works they do. They are planting the "mustard seed," ~ tiny but growing into a large plant. Instead of riding in limos, living in mansions and or wearing machine guns and shooting "uppity" women in the head, prancing around on glitzy stages (or in video taped self riteous poses) flaunting their empty pride and trying to prove how holy they are.

No these clergy are not part of the, 'see, I have all these ...(gaudy) things...and I am donning my machine gun and creating so much fear, and I know that I can enslave women into prostitution and pretend they are merely making garmants, so God loves me more,' crowd. Our local brothers of Islam, our Hindu sisters, our Buddhist monks, and all version of Chrsitians are in my city working TOGETHER for peace.

For centuries we did not even have a media to announce all the good that was done, yet the message got through. The ones who should know will find out...

My 2 cents

Cat In Seattle

P.S. Also it is wise to be quiet while going about the work of justice because it gets you killed either literally or financially or reputation-wise by the hypocrites.

6. Every Thursday since the war began a group of anti war clergy
have held a vigil downtown. Not once has the media bothered to mention them.
