Humiliating spectacle of a world leader caught without a policy

Michael Gawenda Herald Correspondent in Washington
July 15, 2006

IT WAS a stark admission of helplessness from the leader of the world's only super power.

..

Standing beside the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, at a press conference in Rostock before he left for the G8 summit in St Petersburg, George Bush said: "We were headed towards the road map, things looked positive, and the terrorists stepped up. It's really sad where people are prepared to take innocent life to stop that process … in fact it's pathetic."

,,

That response was an admission his administration does not have a policy on the conflict. In fact it has not had a policy since the surprise election victory in January of Hamas in a poll that Washington had encouraged.

The so-called road map for peace is dead and the Bush Administration is paralysed in the face of what threatens to become a region-wide conflict involving Israel, Lebanon, Syria and even Iran. What does Bush expect as he pleads with Israel not to weaken the Lebanese Government in the wake of the bombing of its capital's airport and a blockade of sea ports?

...

1. Bush is no leader and the world is rudderless
Edited on Sat Jul-15-06 01:54 AM by Erika
Clinton got a standing ovation at the U.N. Reagan contributed to tearing down the Berlin Wall. Jimmy Carter won the peace prize for ME peace.

W is shamefully inadequate as are his advisor's. The strong role the U.S. has always had has been tossed out by W's lies, distortions, and inadequacies. He truly is the emperor with no clothes.

2. It would have been instructive if Dubya had agreed to allow German
highschool-aged students ask him questions.

My guess is their grasp of the Middle East conflict exceeds his by plenty.

And their English, too.

3. This is the first time we've had a president who is impotent
concerning global matters. He knows global corporatism and profits, that's it.

4. Agreed, Erika. It's very sad. I'd feel better with just about any
Democrat we have in there instead of Bush.

7. Not that I know of, but I thought instead of blathering to the
European press that he was "looking forward to that pig tonight" he might try facing questions by informed highschool-aged people.

I think many European high schoolers would disavow Dubya of his self-importance in quick order.

Hiya, rodeodance. Nice to see you here in the wee hours.

9. This article from the Herald is really a blast to our President/US (and
sorry to say but we deserve it)---still, it makes me angry that the WH has put our country in such a position.

...to eating "the pig". Over and over. It was on the Daily Show.

Definitely no policy. Nothing to talk about except the food.

13. Correction: Bush HAS a policy -- he just can't reveal it because it
is so venal, so vile, so exploitative that it would be decried from every corner of the earth. Thus it is kept under wraps so RWers can keep raking the money and power in for themselves.
