Treaties become the law of the land

Regarding the July 9 letter to the editor by Tom Van Horne, "Gitmo decision shows court out of control":

Van Horne asserts that the U.S. Supreme Court should only interpret U.S. laws and the Constitution and that it is "out of bounds" for the court to consider the Geneva Conventions because it is "foreign justice."

He should refresh his knowledge of the Constitution and do a little research.

I direct his attention to Article 6, paragraph 2 of the U.S. Constitution: "... ll Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land."

The Conventions are treaties between all the signatory nations.

The U.S. signed the Third Geneva Convention in 1949, and it was ratified by Congress in 1955.

The Geneva Convention is therefore not "out of bounds" because it is U.S. law, according to the Constitution, and we as a nation are bound to honor it by our own law

..cut out LTTE writer's name :) ...

Courts don't count, Congress doesn't count, treaties don't count, science doesn't count, laws don't count. There is only the "unitary executive," aka Der Fuhrer, Il Duce, George Bush.
