Megachurches build a Republican base
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=615&e=1&u=/nm/20060716/pl_nm/religion_politics_usa_dc

LANCASTER, Ohio (Reuters) - It's not Sunday but Fairfield Christian Church is packed. Hundreds of kids are making their way to vacation Bible school, parents are dropping in at the day-care center and yellow-shirted volunteers are everywhere, directing traffic. In one wing of the sprawling church, a coffee barista whips up a mango smoothie while workers bustle around the cafeteria.

<snip>

Sexton believes every word in the Bible, rejects evolution theory, and supports the
Iraq war, the Republican Party and Bush -- in part because he is a born-again Christian.

"I trust his opinion because of his beliefs," she said.

<snip>

In that role, Johnson is being investigated by the Internal Revenue Service for possible violations of a law that prohibits churches and charities from participating in political campaigns. He denies breaking any law.

1. Lisa Sexton, 42, is a kool aid drinking wingnut and a LIAR...
just how did she pray in a public school at her age? Unless she went to a public school that spit on the law...
Why didn't the reporter challenge her on this?

4. I usually do not like to
respond to matters of religion but I would say this, If people would actually read their Bible and read it in such as way to let the words sink in,I am sure many, many would have an epiphany, and would run from the false teachings of those that make a profit off the name of G-d.

7. Unfortunately, they would rather have their "minister" interpret it...
for them.
"Reading and thinking are hard...and epiphany sounds like a foreign word!"

26. And that's exactly what's wrong with faith!
You can believe in any sort of god you want, but when you go looking for day-to-day, practical advice, you wind up getting it from a human being who may not know what he's talking about or may not even be trustworthy.

The faithful are a fanatical army ready to die (sometimes) or kill (almost always) at the word of the first con man who can gain their trust.

12. Because ignorance is rampant, as is a lack of critical-thinking skills.

Because ignorance is rampant, as is a lack of critical-
thinking skills. Many reporters do little more than take
the talking points and set them in type.

14. Yes, she must have been born after the Supreme Court rulings:
Engel v. Vitale was in 1962 and Abington v. Schempp was in 1963; if she's 42 she was born around 1964.

She might have gone to a school that ignored the law, but I think it's more likely she just doesn't understand the SCOTUS rulings: in my experience, wingnuts typically refuse to acknowledge what the Court actually said and usually misrepresent the ruling as forbidding anyone from praying while at school ...

20. The BIG LIE about School Prayer
Edited on Sun Jul-16-06 08:01 PM by Joe Bacon
The Supreme Court did NOT outlaw an individual's right to pray in a public school.

It DID outlaw the state from FORCING a kid to pray a prayer that the state mandated.

I remember full well when there was school prayer in Ambridge, PA. I was there. Protestant kids and parents got VERY upset because the school district mandated that we pray the Catholic version of the Lord's Prayer. The teacher always read from a Catholic bible which pissed off Protestants more. And if you were Jewish or Buddhist or Hindu, well, too bad.

I still remember all the liars who said that prayer was taken out of public schools in the 60s and 70s. I kept telling them if that was so, how come I heard so many kids utter...

"Lord, let the bell ring for this class to end..."

OR

"Lord, let me pass this test..."

OR

"Lord get me out of here..."?

They are liars who are trying to make us into a Christianized version of Saudi Arabia. It's revolting the amount of support for that shit in this country. Their god is the GOP.

17. I used to work with fundies too
Hi,
I am new here..I know all too well about the fundies...I used to work in a day care center that was run by baptists for about 7 years. I remember 2 incidents real well when it came to their repuke beliefs..the 1st was when I had to listen to my boss tell me how Bill Clinton "abused" poor "innocent victim" Monica Lewinsky with a cigar and the other incident was when a co-worker told me how I was supporting abortion by supporting Al Gore. Thank god I don't work there anymore.

thank god for this site :yourock:

that appeals to people whose minds are addled by too much television and not enough books.

A former colleague who taught voice went to see one of her students, a young woman, perform at a megachurch.

She said the young woman was singing "torch songs for Jesus," practically whispering into a very phallic-looking microphone. She found it creepy.

24. I'm so tired of these people spouting lies
"Christians stepped back too far. I prayed in school but my kids can't pray in school," said volunteer Lisa Sexton, 42, a Bible school volunteer. "I should have spoken up earlier."

Bull! Kids can pray in school. They can pray aloud any time they are not disrupting class/proceedings or forcing others to join them, and they can pray silently any time they want.

School prayer has never been outlawed!
