MITCH ALBOM: Bush's stem cell veto: Whom does it save?

July 23, 2006

BY MITCH ALBOM

Consider this scenario: Many years from now, some great-granddaughter of President George W. Bush is crippled in a car accident. There are treatments available that will heal her wounded spinal cord. But the doctor shakes his head and says, "I'm sorry, your great-grandfather didn't support our research, so we're not going to help you."

That would be cruel, right? Turning your back on someone in need?

No crueler than what Bush did last week.

There are people dying in this country from conditions that might be cured through embryonic stem cell research. Their children may be prone to similar afflictions.

Yet with a staged backdrop that was as hypocritical as it was arrogant, Bush used the first veto of his presidency to put a kibosh on funding more stem cell research. This, despite 63 yes votes in the Senate and 70% of Americans being in favor of it.

2. DanCa, you have MS? Or is my
memory al confused? There are several on DU with MS, several with cancer, several with neuro-spinal injuries that can easily result in aggressive opportunistic infections (which many people would be able to clear from the body if they had the muscle control for it).

3. young onset parkinsons disease
It's my brother Douglas that has MS. I am looking into brain surgery as an option, DBS. But it scares the heck out of me. I appreciate your asking.

4. Bless you and your brother. There is so much promise for
these two diseases with SCR. I despise Bush* for this alone. You have my prayers and good wishes. We'll keep hammering at these knuckleheads over the issue.

My dad has PArkinson's, as does my father-in-law, who probaby developed it after his exposure to Agent Orange. He applied to the VA for a special legal award for the injury, but the statute of limitations for application versus time of diagnosis expired.

MTP's Russert is grilling Joshua Bolten on the term "murder" for using frozen embryos. Bolten is dancing all around it. Russert, like many Americans, must have a personal stake in this.

5. I think this should be done; if you are against this research
you should not be able to take advantage of cures that will result from it.

6. Sometimes, Mitch can really lay the truth down
Other times he's complete... well, let's just say I question whether I'm related to him.
