Schweitzer, Tester say Burns fails to deliver for Montana/BillingsGazette.
By JIM GRANSBERY
Of The Gazette Staff

Gov. Brian Schweitzer and state Sen. Jon Tester teamed up to
challenge Sen. Conrad Burns and his record of "delivering for
Montana" at a press conference Thursday on the Rimrocks.

The Democratic pair offered a new slogan for Republican
Burns: "He's not a porker, he's a piker."

Tester is challenging incumbent Burns for his seat in the U.S.
Senate. The campaign is intense, with almost daily volleys in
television and radio ads and dueling press releases since the
June 6 primary election.

Schweitzer narrowly lost his bid for the U.S. Senate to Burns
in 2000. It, too, was a bitter contest. Burns won with 51
percent of the vote, while Schweitzer collected 47 percent, a
margin of 4 points, or 14,000 votes. Third-party candidates
got the remaining 2 percent.
Challenging the argument that Burns should be re-elected
because of his seniority and for garnering more than $2
billion in federal spending for Montana over the past 18
years, Schweitzer suggested that by historical comparison,
Burns falls short.
