One by one, Republican politicians are defending the indefensible. Sen. Trent Lott, a member of the Select Intelligence Committee, stated that "factually," the president was correct. The administration and its supporters seem to be saying that making knowingly false and misleading statements to rally public support for a preemptive war is not a big deal.
Apparently, deliberate lies wrapped in the flag and delivered by the president in a transparent attempt to sway public opinion in favor of going to war with Iraq are not quite as serious as, say, lying about having an extramarital affair with a White House intern.
This country went to war, placed troops in harm's way and inflicted civilian casualties because the president told us that Iraq was a nuclear threat.
Leading up to the war, hundreds of thousands of protesters in the United States and millions elsewhere demonstrated their opposition to this war. They were called unpatriotic, members of the liberal fringe and unsupportive of our troops. In light of these new revelations, their skepticism seems warranted.
The president lied, and as a result we are engaged in a guerilla war with no apparent exit strategy.
