Iraq court delays Saddam verdict

(AP)
Updated: 2006-10-04 07:05

BAGHDAD - Judges have postponed the verdict in the war crimes trial of Saddam Hussein, the court announced Tuesday, a delay that comes amid growing concern that any ruling would inflame Iraq's deadly sectarian divide.

/snip/

A court official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to release the information, said the verdict could be put off until late October or early November.

6. There probably will be several October surprises. The OP could be one
My personal nomination for one of the October surprises is that we will bomb Iran.

7. You know, I think you're on to something, there.
Instead of a devastaing 'October Surprise' perhaps it will be a flurry of little things, each targetted to a specific demographic. Instead of a single issue, they give each of their single-issue voters something specific to vote on. Why focus on god, guns and gays when you also have abortion, Iraq, Iran, N Korea, France, school shootings, hollywood, etc, etc? You know that Chavez is going to invade Texas? All he has to do is give all those Mexican border jumpers the half-million AKs he just bought. Things in Afghanistan are going so well that we are going to follow Musharraf's lead and cut a deal with the Taliban for government sharing.

Expect anything.

5. Thsi IS Plausible, But It Won't Work
Sounds like grasping at the last straw on the camel's back, which won't fit through the eye of a needle, but sticks it's nose under the tent at every opportunity....

(okay! okay! I'll stop mixing the metphors, if someone will mix me a stiff drink! Mimosa, anyone? I've still got that Fitzmas champagne on ice...)

9. That could backfire
If that is the surprise, it's not a good one.

First, if the verdict is announced and Iraq goes up in flames, that won't help the Republicans. It would probably hurt them even more.

Second, if there's an appeals process, and if Saddam uses it, that would put off any final resolution for some time, probably until after the U.S. elections.

14. Especially since the first 20 or so ...
... will just be digging out from under the real world October surprises that are constantly being delivered because the Republican approach to government prefers to sweep problems under the rug to solving them. Too many rugs have become too lumpy, and too many unpleasant things are getting kicked out from underneath them.

12. The surprise will be that Saddam will "cut a deal"...
Edited on Sun Oct-22-06 07:26 AM by calipendence
... according to the spinmeisters, that will lead us "where to find Bin Laden" (even if he really hasn't). Then we'll "find" Bin Laden at that point, and everything will be too what Rove wants.

1) They've "caught" Bin Laden before the election.
2) They've "connected" Saddam Hussein with Bin Laden and Al Queda.
3) Noone will have time to refute item 2.
4) They can even claim that they helped go against capital punishment with this "deal".
5) Saddam keeps himself from getting offed by doing nothing other than what the spinmeisters want him to do.
