Bill Janklow should resign
From the Rapid City Journal:

Bill Janklow has been a longtime public servant for the people of South Dakota. He was governor for 16 years, and before that served four years as attorney general. Most South Dakotans returned him to office and elected him as their U.S. representative in 2002 because of his effectiveness as a public leader. His involvement in a fatal accident in which he was charged with a felony on Friday calls into question his effectiveness to serve as South Dakota's lone representative in Congress.
<snip>
...Janklow should resign his position as a U.S. congressman. We don't see how he could continue to effectively serve as South Dakota's at-large representative with these charges hanging over his head. If he is convicted of the felony charge, he would lose his voting privileges in the U.S. House of Representatives and could not participate in committee meetings until his record is cleared or he is re-elected. For most purposes, South Dakota would lose its representation in the U.S. House.

More than that, Janklow already has lost the moral authority to continue to serve as South Dakota's congressman.

Bill Janklow has been a loyal public servant for the people of South Dakota for most of his life. His next step on behalf of the people he has served so well should be to resign as U.S. representative for South Dakota.

1. I agree...I think what he did was inexcusable...
considering his history with speeding and driving like an idiot. He has no business in public office.

3. Imagine
A Republican losing "the moral authority to continue to serve." If he does resign that may guarantee a Daschle reelection as the gop hate machine will push Thune to run for Janklow's seat instead of challenging Daschle. It must be incredibly busy in the republican klaverns that plot election strategy.

5. Doubt he'd run against Daschle
They are usually quite cooperative (friendly might be too strong a word).

7. wild bill history here
Edited on Wed Dec-03-03 11:14 AM by cade
bill is a class A piece of shit.

snip-

Meet "Wild Bill", a name given to William Janklow in 1974 when he told reporters "The only way to deal with these AIM leaders is to put a bullet in their heads." By portraying AIM and Indian activists who were fighting for the civil liberties of Indians in the State of South Dakota as criminals and communists he scored a landside victory over his opponent in the election for the Governers Office.

During the Occupation of Wounded Knee, Janklow wore army fatiques and was seen in the company of "vigilante's" (Most of them Dickie Wilsons GOON Squad", who were firing on both, government positions and into Wounded Knee. Only explanation can be is that they were trying to force a full-scale armed assault on Wounded Knee. He was twice accused of rape of young Indian girls, one of them his baby sitter. On both occasssion the FBI refused to turn over the results of their investigation of the charges over to courts and refused to prosecute Janklow. Jnaklow was assisted through "COINTELPRO" (The secret campaign of the FBI to subvert the American Indian Movement as well as other groups) to win the governorship of South Dakota. He was the FBI's preferred candidate since it was clear that he would look the other way in any cases of civil rights violations and other illegal activities by the FBI and the Oglala Tribal Police under the command of Dickie Wilson, the poorest excuse in the world of a human being. In recent history, Janklow refused to put up signs for an Indian Lesbian Group that were maintaining a section of highway in South Dakota. When challenged in the courts, he threatened to remove ALL signs of all groups if he lost. He undraped a picture that had been covered for years in the Governor's Mansion that depicted A white man with his boot on the throat of an Indian laying on the ground. When asked to recover it because it was offensive and racist he refused. When a case was filed against him, he finally covered it. Now as a Congressman he is on record at a meeting of Governors stating that Terrorists should be treated as Prisoners of War and shot. That if anyone in "His" state shot a terrorist he would pardon them. My personal opinion is that if he wishes to shoot a terrorist, he does not have to look far. He has perpetuated, endorsed and covered up acts of terrorism against Indians for years. Janklow's definition of a terrorist is anyone who does not think as he does. Coincidently he is a "long time friend" of President Bush, Scary eh.

The links below are to reports and documents that prove many of the charges listed above. Do a search on Google on William Janklow and you will find many sources validating all charges and revealing the complete lack of ethics and disregard for most minorities of this man.

8. Janklow won't resign and won't be convicted
As a friend and ally of the Imperial Family, he is above the law like the rest of them.

It is quite astonishing that the vestiges of the Old Republic were even functional enough to bring it to a trial at all, even one with a predeetermined Federalist outcome.

Is it Jury trial or just the judge will render the verdict?

I'll step out on a limb and say it's NOT a jury trial (Busheviks fear nothing so much as the Will of the People, as all Totalitarians have)

I'm also willing to bet the judge hearing the case is a Federalist Society Member.

Anyone have any info on this?

9. It is a jury trial
Hometown jury--

Don't know much about the judge. BJ was governor for so long that he appointed most of the judges in the state, don't know if this is one of "his" or not.
