FIVE NYT letters today in reply to Krugman's editorial the other day
They're all great. I think we can at last consider this issue mainstreamed. Here's just the first one:

To the Editor:

Re "Hack the Vote," by Paul Krugman (column, Dec. 2):

Mine is a voice from the belly of the beast (Palm Beach County, Fla.) who is not sure whether she voted for Al Gore or Patrick J. Buchanan in 2000.

My county now has touch-screen voting without a paper trail, and I am terrified of a hacking scandal in 2004 ? here or elsewhere ? that will make pregnant chads look like simple artifacts of the Neanderthal age.

The bill of Representative Rush Holt, Democrat of New Jersey, to mandate a paper trail would at least give hope for accurate recounts and should be enacted immediately. This is a national emergency.

REBECCA SCHLAM LUTTO
West Palm Beach, Fla., Dec. 2, 2003

There's also one from Palast.

3. Ouch! Check the last one
...
It may come as a surprise, but the credibility of your democracy is already being questioned in much of the rest of the world.

We've seen dubious redistricting schemes and the disenfranchisement of eligible voters.

Your democracy has already changed from a shining example to an object lesson in how quickly and easily democracy can be damaged.
...

Thanks for posting this.

5. Honestly, who can disagree with protecting the integrity of the vote?
Anyone who could possibly be opposed to this issue is either a Republican operative or a naive moron.

I checked out the FAQ on www.diebold.com's election system's page. Strange, paper ballots back-up is not even questioned.

His something else that is odd about their position. Why wouldn't they sell paper printers as an add-on device for their systems. Have you ever seen a for-profit company that didn't sell products that would add to their revenue stream? They build them into their ATMs...why wouldn't they build them for their election systems?

Something stinks.

6. Who can disagree with doing the right thing, you ask?
The dirty tricksters, a la Nixon, who are so terribly fearful that they will lose the election unless they cheat.

Simple as that, and if we (Democrats) haven't learned from 1972, then we are pretty damn stupid.

*sigh*
