AMMAN - Jordanian press on Monday argued that there was a close relationship between the timing of the death verdict passed Sunday on ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and the US congressional elections set for Tuesday.
“The US denial of the existence of such a link is as far from truth and sincerity as the Bush administration was when it cited Iraq’s arms of mass destruction as a pretext for invading the country” in 2003, the daily Al Arab Al Yawm said in an editorial.
The paper contended that if the ruling failed to shore up the chances of the Republican Party in the upcoming polls as the US administration planned “then many things will falter in Baghdad including the government of Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki.”
Columnist Yasser Zaatreh dubbed the Saddam trial “a farce from A to Z” and said that the former Iraqi leader had managed to “double his gains during the trial in terms of driving home the idea that he was in jail because he opposed the schemes of the American invaders.”
