Wash Post: many people have worse jobs amid "recovery"

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A62464-2003Dec13.html

More people are working part time than ever: Last month, for the first time, the number exceeded 25 million.

More are classified as "involuntary" part-time, meaning they would rather be working full time: 4.9 million in November, an increase of 600,000 from a year ago and 1.6 million since the recession began in March 2001.

More are working for less pay than they have worked for in the past -- the sectors of the economy adding jobs pay an average of $14.65 an hour, while those discarding jobs pay $16.92, according to an analysis by the Economic Policy Institute, a Washington research center.

In addition, more people are cobbling together a working life of two or three part-time jobs to keep up with bills. More jobs come without benefits, the chance for mobility and the security of long-term stability. Wages for most workers are not keeping up with inflation. The number of manufacturing jobs has declined 40 months in a row. The average time spent looking for work is now more than 20 weeks. And many people remain not working at all. Even with the addition of those 328,000 jobs, the total number of jobs is still 2.35 million lower than before the recession.

1. Scary, ain't it?
We'll know for sure that we've passed the point of no return when the collection agencies start to lay off phone jockeys because they can no longer degrade people into paying up.

2. Worse Jobs
Hell, I'd like to find one that pays $14.65 a hour....I went from $17.00 to being layed off for 10 mmonths to the grand amount of $9.75. I hate it, but at least I've got health insurance again....and hopefully something better will come along.

11. Seriously...
Where are the sector's that are paying $14.65? I started out good 3 yrs ago when i first got out of college making $42K/yr, and went down to $6.50/hr., then $400/week draw + comm, and now $10.00/hr part-time. I've bounced around so many other jobs that one of my relatives says i'm a real life version of the guy from the tv show quantum leap (arrgh! being compared to scott bakula  j/k i liked quantum leap, jury's still out for me on enterprise though.)

Edited on Sun Dec-14-03 04:06 AM by The Zanti Regent
Booma is in the real world, where you have to struggle to get anything, unlike the lying Republican Presstitutes who whore for the WHORESHINGTON POST.

Those assholes live in a Lasseiz Fairyland, if ANYONE deserves to eke out a living at subminimum wage, well, it's the LIARS at the WHORESHINGTON POST!

oh yeah, after 18+ years at Citigroup and being laid-off, he finally found a temp job. Nice, huh.

10. Sorry to hear that....
May 2004 bring about the - albeit slow - process of putting this country back together so that we may all be better off.

6. It really irritates me that the
right wing media whores celebrate job rates going up.....They don't clarify that the former computer programmer or middle office managers are now working at low skilled tasks. Some jobs accepted now are food service, retail, contract work.....all part-time without benefits!

Folks can get medical care or pay for it now......They are loosing their homes, relationships failing related to financial stress....

7. The "failing relationships" part is the worst of all, I think.
It's a shame that people turn against each other when times get rough, isn't it? :(

9. Its a cause and affect response.
Fear of failure, feelings of inadequacy.......

Folks need to channel this fear and direct it to the responsible culprit....*bush and company.

To feel empowered .....Get out and vote, get others registered and campaign for the democrats.

13. People at "The Onion" are prophets, I tell ya:
They had two of the most prescient fake headlines right after Bush was elected:

"Bush: Our long national nightmare of peace and prosperity is finally over!"

and

"Bush vows to create 500,000 crappy jobs"
