Worn-out hymnal, off-key chorus

George W. Bush's remaining few dozen defenders find nothing in the arsenal except their ever-reliable old friend, Bill Clinton. And he turns out to be a dud.

<snip>

Then they extracted resignations from eight of their own federal prosecutors and replaced them with better pals. In at least two of those case, the ousted prosecutor tells of having been pressured by Republicans either to go harder in investigations of Democrats or ease off Republicans.

Bush's apologists have turned to the most-worn page of their hymnals. They've settled on that predictable and alternately pitiable and comical defense: Hey, Slick Willie did it, too.

<snip>

All newly inaugurated presidents install their own U.S. attorneys - at the outset. The well-established custom before Clinton was for all existing U.S. attorneys serving at the pleasure of the departed president to offer their resignations to the incoming guy. But Republicans had become famously less courteous by 1993, and few U.S. attorneys submitted those resignations to Attorney General Janet Reno. So she fired them.
