Another "Style" article in WaPo about Pelosi's dress sense
Ewwww.

Over the past week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi toured the Middle East with a congressional entourage and a generous collection of scarves. The scarves provided her with an additional bit of sartorial modesty when the situation required it and she was also able to use them to cover her head when protocol dictated -- such as when she visited the tomb of John the Baptist inside a mosque in Damascus and tied one around her head in the manner of a Hitchcock heroine.

When was the last time you saw an article about a male politician's outfits?

:puke:

1. I hate to say it, but in all fairness
Laura Bush is constantly derided for her choice of clothing right here on DU and has been for years. It's mainly because she dresses like shit, but it's no excuse. In 1999/2000 it seemed like Al Gore was always on defense for his choice of suits, so it does happen. Who actually gives a shit what politicians are wearing? Personally, I'd like to see this administration wearing orange jumpsuits!

2. In fairness, the theme of Givhan's piece was about the symbolism of clothing.
And here, at the bottom of the piece, is her main point: "Pelosi, with her carefully coordinated scarves, respected her foreign surroundings without ceding any control."

The author also made the point, good I think, that Pelosi is sophisticated enough to have planned ahead of time for this. She didn't say it outright, but I think she approves of a leader who anticipates what diplomacy requires and does it without fuss. (You know, like grownups do.) BTW, she does discuss males in 'mufti' in the article. I think—as an article about fashion as a part of diplomacy—it was a good piece.
