Dick Cavett Speaks Again: What Was He Thinking?
NYT

Is it just me, or has the time come to get out the fool’s cap, dust it off and place it smartly on the head of John McCain?

What has happened to that man? He makes a nitwit public remark about the newly “safe” Baghdad in which Gen. David H. Petraeus, commander of the American forces in Iraq, saunters about without a helmet. When it is learned that the general, being of sound mind, goes out with a small army of Humvees and fully armed bodyguards, McCain is embarrassed.

He backtracks and rephrases weakly, insisting that he didn’t mean to say “without protection.” He should have left it at that and it would now be quite forgotten. Where were his advisors?

Instead, he hops a plane to Baghdad and proceeds to stage (the operative word) what must be one of the strangest travesties in modern political history.

We at home are treated to the sight of a gregarious McCain, shopping and giggling in the marketplace — and wearing no helmet. He is, however, clad in a flak jacket. What’s wrong with this picture? A man in a flak jacket selling safety? .....MORE....

2. I miss Dick Cavett
TCM recently ran his interviews with Mel Brooks, Bette Davis, and a few others. I got sloppily nostalgic for the days long gone when we could find occasional wit on the tube.

He did a great job of pointing out sunny GOP absurdity.

5. I rented a couple of those DVDs. The one with Bette Davis was
fabulous. She was such a diva, but a very charming, likeable diva.

6. My favorites were Alfred Hitchcock
and Mel Brooks. Hitchcock's humor was very much like my own, dry as the Mojave. Bette Davis and Katherine Hepburn were also wonderful. Cavett knew how to play them all.

I miss WIT.

3. Call for Photoshoppers
We need some sort of a Photoshop montage of McCain in that market with Bush on the carrier deck in his flight suit, maybe with a background of Dukakis in the tank watching over them. Maybe throw in Cheney hiding in the bushes with the microphone and that German guy in the YouTube video piloting "the Bush."
