Bush Anoints Himself as the Insurer of Constitutional Government in Emergency (The Progressive)
Bush Anoints Himself as the Insurer of Constitutional Government in Emergency

May 18, 2007 By Matthew Rothschild

With scarcely a mention in the mainstream media, President Bush has ordered up a plan for responding to a catastrophic attack.

Under that plan, he entrusts himself with leading the entire federal government, not just the Executive Branch. And he gives himself the responsibility “for ensuring constitutional government.”

He laid this all out in a document entitled "National Security Presidential Directive/NSPD 51" and "Homeland Security Presidential Directive/HSPD-20."

The White House released it on May 9.

Other than a discussion on Daily Kos led off by a posting by Leo Fender, and a pro-forma notice in a couple of mainstream newspapers, this document has gone unremarked upon.

The subject of the document is entitled “National Continuity Policy.”

It defines a “catastrophic emergency” as “any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government function.”

This could mean another 9/11, or another Katrina, or a major earthquake in California, I imagine, since it says it would include “localized acts of nature, accidents, and technological or attack-related emergencies.” ......(more)

1. It is bad enough that the president thinks that he should be in charge
of everything. It is even worse when it is this sorry ass, piece of shit.

4. Nation wide Martial Law
The cause of which will be orchestrated from the White House, aka 9/11 all over again.

Where the hell is Congress at slapping this down?

5. Isn't this how dictatorships are started?

I can just see it now: The year is 2017. His Excellency and Protector of All (Beer) and Most Supreme High Priest Bush declares the world corrupt and orders all nations to bow before him before accusing Communist China of being anti-democratic, and signing a secret plan to take over the world.

I smell trouble . . .

EDIT for typo

6. I wonder how this PDD differs from the one it revokes.
It replaces PDD-67, with the name "Enduring Constitutional Government
and Continuity of Government Operations".

"The text of PDD-67 has not been released, and there is no White House Factsheet summarizing its provisions." http://www.fas.org/irp/offdocs/pdd/pdd-67.htm

7. The upside of this is that it would set the stage for a military coup
which seems to be the only way the US will ever be rid of Bush et al.
