A wall to break down barriers
BY CINDY GONZALEZ
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Nicole DeLue was mostly curious about the huge "border wall" that had sprung up on her path to Creighton University.

The structure was covered with written messages such as, "U.S. Border, Do Not Cross" and "Hunger is Bigger than Fear."

A simulated "border wall" stretches across the entrance to Creighton University at 24th and California Streets. Designed by artist Hector Castellanos, it symbolizes the literal wall some want to build at the U.S. southern border, as well as the figurative wall raised by discrimination, supporters say.

It was dotted with white crosses bearing names of illegal immigrants who died on their journey to the United States.

When DeLue got to class, she asked around. Seems the 48-foot-wide, 15-foot-high wall had caused a stir. Other students were talking.

That was OK with the wall's creators, who wanted to make a statement about why they had gathered in Omaha for a national conference of the Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network.

Nearly 200 bishops and other clergymen, immigrant advocates and foreign-born workers from Florida to California met for three days at Creighton to set an agenda for the next decade.
