Missing Mary McGrory (David Broder W-P)
I am headed out this week for my 12th presidential campaign, but unlike the first 11, I will not have the company of my favorite traveling companion, Mary McGrory. The great liberal columnist, surely the most elegant newspaper writer Americans have read over the past half-century, has been ill since last March and recently accepted the generous buyout offer given to veteran employees by The Post. Incomprehensible as it seems, she has finished her journalistic career.

Would it be selfish of me to say I wish Mary were back? I do. I wish even more that she find good health, but that's a tall order for a stroke victim. Mary's column's were a staple of old liberals' (like me) diet. I didn't agree with her 100% of the time, just 99%.

Mary, you are missed ... truly missed.

1. Sorry to see her go
She was an elegant writer and its sad to hear her career is over. I hope she eventually recovers to the point where she can write occasional columns. We definately can't afford to lose any liberal columnists.

2. I hope she recovers to the point she can read the occasional op/ed.
And smile. Or frown. And then, maybe, respond. Perhaps, some day, in writing.

3. Thanks for posting this article
..."she suffered a stroke, which left this marvelous writer, never at a loss for the right word, with a tongue that will not obey the commands her brain sends. It is too cruel. I will miss her company and her wisdom -- and her bags -- every day of this campaign."

How sad.....I have been following Mary ever since she was a regular on Meet the Press panel. She charmed me with her wit, wisdom and way with words.
