Medical workers face military draft
Pentagon plan calls up medics, nurses, doctors in national emergencies

The Pentagon will draft experienced medical personnel, including medics, nurses and physicians, in the event of a national emergency.

The "health care personnel delivery system" is being readied by the Department of Defense, according to a report published by the Newhouse News Service, to cope with military casualties from a large-scale biological or chemical attack. The plan was authorized by Congress in 1987 to deal with large-scale casualties that outstripped the active-duty military's ability to handle them.

The news service also reported the Pentagon is considering other "special skills" drafts, to include military linguists, computer experts or engineers, that could arise from other immediate needs.

Time to email the American Nurses Association.

This would not be a good thing and would cause a BIG stink in an already strained health care system. I'm an RN and I'm over 44, so I guess it would be left to us old folks to try to hold together the crumbling health care system at home while the small numbers of younger folks are getting shot at and exposed to biohazards that may kill them as well!! It would be nice if they would let people going into health care professions know that they were subject to such a draft! This is something that has a definite possibility of happening under the Bush Regime.

Maybe I shouldn't go to medical imaging school. Then again, they wouldn't want a openly-gay cancer patient, would they?

from the rightwing/sometimeslibertarian fringe. If I read about this elsewhere - then I will give it credence. The stories don't often bear out - so don't worry yet. But - one never knows. I would put the story in the "keep your eyes open for this topic" category - sort of a heads up... maybe something is going on... and thus pay more attention to any related stories.

I've seen another article from a more mainstream news souce in the Spring. Let's face it, when it gets bad enough, the government will do whatever the hell it wants.
