Sectarian 'cleansing' in Baghdad
U.S. and Iraqi military officials say such violence has eased, but the killings continue in two battered neighborhoods.
By Tina Susman, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
August 12, 2007

BAGHDAD — The expressway skirting the Amil neighborhood in Baghdad is only a couple of miles from Mahmoud Mekki's home, but it might as well be a hundred.

To reach it, Mekki must pass checkpoints guarded by Iraqi police commandos who he says are really Shiite Muslim militiamen trying to drive Sunni Muslims out of Amil.

So Mekki, a Sunni, remains holed up in his home, dependent on sympathetic Shiite neighbors to pick up his groceries and run other errands.

1. Don't you just hate this terrorist on terrorist violence that we have
gotten ourselves in the middle of?? I can hear Condi stating something to the effect, "No one could have imagined that there would be division and violence in Iraq after we had Saddam offed".

2. Point of clarification
not sure how you define "terrorist" but it seems like it is largely criminal-on-innocents rather than terrorism.

Just like drive-by-shootings in our inner cities, except much larger in scope.

In any sane world the entire administration would have been sent packing and people with brains would be cleaning up the mess. No corporation, and, I suspect, no other country in the world, would tolerate this continuing incompetance on every possible front anywhere near this long. Tony Blair had to step down, for cripes sakes!

Yes, I can hear Condi saying that, and all of them going "who, me?" - or a Miss Piggy "Moi?"
