Kilbuck police disbanded
Kilbuck police disbanded
Saturday, November 24, 2007
By James O'Toole, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The Kilbuck Township supervisors voted 2-1 Tuesday evening to disband their police department and instead rely on patrols from the Pennsylvania State Police.

Tim Frew, chairman of he board of supervisors, could not immediately be reached for comment on the action, which took effect immediately.

"I opposed it on the timing," Russell Hardiman, who opposed the decision, said yesterday. "I thought more notice could have been given."

Mr. Hardiman said that he could not comment further, "because the matter with the union is not resolved."

The Ohio River community had a force of two full-time and several part-time officers who had handled patrols for the neighboring communities of Glenfield and Ben Avon Heights as well as Kilbuck. State police are expected to take over in Glenfield as well while Ben Avon Heights will rely on Ohio Township, which already provides coverage to several other nearby communities.

Kilbuck has a population of just over 700, according to the Penn State Data Center. While it is a relatively small community, its now ex-police force had an outsized reputation among motorists using Ohio River Boulevard because of the force's zealous enforcement of speeding laws.

5. Er, no. It says in the very first sentence they'll rely on the state police instead of local. nt

2. Good - this bunch was nothing but a money-grabbing bunch

of pirates preying on motorists. They had a well-deserved reputation for being nothing but a money-making machine for Kilbuck. I was always glad I rarely had to venture in to their area.

I hope you post this in the DU Pennsylvania forum. I doubt there will be many tears shed from we DU'ers who live in Pittsburgh area.

3. Good news
I lived in Ohio Twp. in the 60s, and had an orange and black 450 HP Camero that had a Glenfield cop crazy chasing me. Soupy we called him and his son is the Glenfield cop today, or maybe not. Of course I don't recommend driving the way we did then, and I deny ever speeding at all.

4. I'm glad I never had the pleasure of finding out about their speed traps
as I live on the other side of town. Some of these smaller boroughs and townships do make their money via such speed traps and I've seen my own wait near bars around 2am in the past. Do know the officers don't cost that much and are needed for the protection of the citizens in their respective communities. The boroughs and townships force the officers as employees to get their quotas to help stuff the coffers of these small communities that lack the people and property to reap much tax money from otherwise.
