Smoking gun against Iran?
U.S. officials accuse nation of seeking a nuke arsenal, sponsoring terrorism
The Associated Press
updated 2:40 p.m. PT, Sun., Nov. 25, 2007

The accusations come almost every day from U.S. officials: Iran is seeking a nuclear weapon. Sponsoring terrorism. Killing Americans in Iraq. Intent on Israel’s destruction. Yet, some officials add, its government will collapse if only given a push.

Does the U.S. have solid proof that Iran is guilty of such a long list of misdeeds? Or is the case against Iran — and the certainty of its ill intent — a bit fuzzy?

In the buildup to the Iraq war, the Bush administration made allegations against Saddam Hussein that polls show Americans believed, but which later proved wrong.

Now, with U.S. officials leading the pressure on Iran, many Americans are weighing the evidence. Is there a smoking gun or even a smoldering one?

2. If the crazies attack Iran,
Democratic candidates/nominees who backed Kyl-Lieberman might have a hard time distancing themselves from the new conflict in the minds of some voters.

Of course, all federal candidates/nominees would probably have to take a position on the attack, which might present difficulties for some.

5. a couple of things -- first there is real
pressure coming from israel to take action against iran.
second there is a real need fpr a distraction from all the ''success'' we're seeing from the surge.
third, how much can all the community of wealthy investors hate these high gas prices, etc?

these ''pressures'' are making up for the lack of
solid evidense. these ''pressures'' are making u.s. officials act as if they know the minds of iranians.

this from the article is very telling:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21965160/page/2/
''But the Iranian-backed groups do not now pose any direct, imminent threat to the United States, said Rohan Gunaratna, head of the International Center for Political Violence and Terrorism Research in Singapore.
“The biggest threat to the United States, its allies and friends does not come — I repeat, does not come — from the Iran-sponsored groups,” he said. “It comes from al-Qaida.”
U.S. intelligence agencies broadly agree: McConnell told Congress this year that al-Qaida remained by far America’s biggest threat''

why does our government trumpet fear of a country that poses no threat to the u.s.?
and why wouldn't we use negotiations to go from point A with the iranians to point B?

7. wow, what a typically deceptive headline
the usual crap we can expect from AP, but there is some good stuff buried in the piece amongst the lies. i particularly like the bit about how an 'intelligence estimate' has been 'delayed' ("originally due last spring") which of course means it didn't contain the sort of information wanted by the white house so its being adjusted to align with the administrations war-mongering ways.

12. even if they did have weapons
that's not a reason for invading another nation. I didn't believe it with Iraq, and I don't believe it today. Plenty of nations have chemical, and nuclear weapons. I don't like it...and I'd love to see a world treaty removing them. But, with the reality on the ground today, that's no reason to invade, otherwise...we would have invaded Israel, Libya, and others.

On top of that hypothetical, the Iranians DON't have the weapons, which is more reason not to attack.

The Republicans and Neocons are acting out their fantasizes about reshaping the Middle East for our geopolitical gain. It's straight out of the playbook. Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran...and then pressure the rest of the Arab states to bend to our will on Israel.

14. IAEA Says: No Smoking Gun
So why doesn't the controlled right wing news media emphasize this truth?

Why doesn't the passive American public demand that Bush put up or shut up??

Why aren't the Congressional Democrats forcing Bush to present evidence after all these months of repeated lies???

Passivity is compliance.

Bush cannot promote his wars alone. It is the support he gets from the passive public and Congress that is abetting his campaign of world conquest.
