Svetlana Orlova had no idea why she had been invited on to the daytime television show and she was shocked to find herself face to face with the man who had beaten her for years.

She was further stunned when he produced an engagement ring and proposed. Looking deeply uncomfortable, she shook her head.

The public rebuff cost her her life. Within days she had been stabbed to death and her former lover was under arrest for murder.

Now ministers in Spain are to hold crisis talks with broadcasters as the nation searches its soul over its trashy television culture.

Ricardo Navarro, 30, had told Patricia’s Daily Show, which has an audience of 2 million, that he and Ms Orlova had broken up because of a dispute over money. Ms Orlova contested that, saying: “There were many other things”, but without elaborating or mentioning that she had a restraining order against her former boyfriend.

1. So that kind of crap isn't a purely American phenomenon, is it?
He played the show, the girlfriend, and the system, and it resulted in her death. He should've never been allowed to leave the set except in handcuffs. It was a violation of the restraining order, regardless of the venue.

She probably never realized how much danger she was actually in, and that's sad as hell.

2. no, it's not - and in U.S. the nets have armies
of lawyers going over the legal liabilities for shows like Springer and the like--as bad as those shows are, they will spend money on legal & on set legal/protection of participants & staff coverage.

3. Sounds like she wasn't a Spanish citizen
Bulgarian from the looks of it. I wonder if she'll get the same treatment as a Spanish or Wester European would...

Tragic. Very tragic.

4. I can't imagine what goes through people's minds...
When a trash television program wants them to come on their show but won't tell them why. It's not going to be a good thing - either your significant other is cheating on you, the person you've been dating for a year is not the gender you think, or someone is going to accuse you of being the father of their children. If I got a call from them, I would tell them to go to hell then I would start questioning all the people close to me to figure out what's going on and take care of it privately without the nation watching.

On a somewhat different note: As a heterosexual male, I'm incredibly disappointed in my brethren that do go on these shows because on the few times I've watched, it has become apparent that some of us cannot tell the difference between sexes because I've never seen a gay male or a lesbian go on and learn their lover is of the "wrong" sex (female for the gay male and male for the lesbian).

5. indeed! if you can't tell the difference between the sexes
you're, at least, not doing any in depth investigation!

6. good grief
they should ask guests, "for legal reasons, before appearing on the show, is there anyone you have a restraining order upon that we should know about since this is a public show, or other legal matter you would like us to know just in case?"

one would think producers of such shows would use the two IQ points they seem to have to think of these things beforehand???
