Al Gore finds an open door in Canberra

Climate-change campaigner Al Gore's problems with getting access to an Australian prime minister are well and truly over.

"G'day, Kevin," was the former US vice-president and Nobel Peace Prize winner's greeting to Kevin Rudd when he telephoned the prime minister-elect on Monday to congratulate him.

"Actually, I've taught Al how to say g'day. As you know, with some of our American friends it's very hard to get it quite right," Mr Rudd told reporters in Brisbane.

(snip)
Mr Rudd says the pair will be meeting up again at UN global-warming talks in Bali next month.

3. Might be better this way
Of all people, Al would know how difficult it is to get anything meaningful done from the Oval Office with Congress, electorate, lobbyists and half-a-dozen other groups all pulling in different directions. It looks like he's going to settle for bugging the piss out of Congress and the new President on enviromental issues and perhaps, the world might be a better place for that.

4. That will only work in so far as the corporate media give voice to his concerns,
personally, I believe the Internet will have to take up the slack.

6. Who better?
Gore might not have "invented the internet" but he did have a very big hand in it at the beginning and if anyone understands the potential power of the web, he does.

5. I think Gore's going to have a great time in Bali
He really loves doing this stuff. Remember, he helped broker the original Kyoto treaty -- and accounts of how excited and happy he was, on the flight back to the US, inspired me to get involved in global warming issues too.

And this year is going to be so much better than 1997, in terms of who's backing him up. He'll have a bunch of world leaders there to stand beside him (boo to my PM Stephen Harper!) ... and a ton of experts in science and policy. And the support of the people in most countries in the world (even in the US). Plus he's now got a Nobel, an Oscar, and many other awards besides.

In January I start teaching my own college-level global warming responses class. I am going to be watching the Bali meeting very closely, because it will affect what we as a planet will do, in the next 10 years.
