Elizabeth Hardwick, who as a studious Kentucky belle set her ambitions on becoming a member of New York's glittering intellectual elite and then achieved them as a critic, essayist, fiction writer and a co-founder of The New York Review of Books, died on Sunday in New York. She was 91.

Hardwick was known mainly as a critic and is credited with expanding the possibilities of the literary essay through her intimate tone and forceful logic.

With her husband, the poet Robert Lowell, and the editors Jason and Barbara Epstein, she helped create one of the country's most influential and admired literary journals.

She was among the last of an era of rambunctious intellectuals that included Edmund Wilson, Mary McCarthy, Lionel and Diana Trilling, Philip Rahv and Lowell, with whom she had a publicly turbulent marriage.
