The Modesto Bee and its sister papers in Sacra- mento and Fresno are outsourcing some advertising production work to India.
The Fresno Bee was the first of the three to shift work to Express KCS, a San Jose-based firm with production facilities in New Delhi and Gurgaon. The Modesto and Sacramento papers announced their changes to employees Wednesday.
In Modesto, the shift will eliminate five production artist positions, or less than 1 percent of The Bee's work force; company officials said they hope to place those employees in other jobs by the transition's completion next spring.
In a memo to employees, Bee President and Publisher Margaret Randazzo said that Express KCS has more than 30 years of experience providing high-quality media preparation services to companies around the world. She expressed confidence that the change will allow The Bee to serve its advertising customers more effectively, efficiently and economically.
Randazzo also stressed that The Bee's own staff will continue to handle sales and creative design work for its print and online advertisers.
The Bees are owned by the McClatchy Co., the nation's third-largest newspaper publisher. This year, the Sacramento-based company transferred circu- lation customer service at its papers, including Mo- desto, to an Illinois com- pany that includes opera- tions in the Philippines.
