The Doctor is Out (Dowd criticizes Howard Dean's "unadorned, unstyled and unconcerned" wife
Edited on Wed Jan-02-08 11:53 PM by antiimperialist
Yesterday Maureen Dowd said that the three major candidates for the Democratic nomination had wives and husbands who "talked too much".
But in Howard Dean's wife's case, she talked too little. Read this story from January 15th, 2004, just before the Iowa caucuses:

The first hard evidence most people had that Howard Dean was actually married came with a startling picture of his wife on the front page of Tuesday's Times, accompanying a Jodi Wilgoren profile.

In worn jeans and old sneakers, the shy and retiring Dr. Judith Steinberg Dean looked like a crunchy Vermont hippie, blithely uncoiffed, unadorned, unstyled and unconcerned about not being at her husband's side -- the anti-Laura. You could easily imagine the din of Rush Limbaugh and Co. demonizing her as a counterculture fem-lib role model for the blue states.

Here last pagraphraph/sentence, in the form of a plea to Dean:

Physician, heal thy spouse.

7. She was Howell Raines' mistress at one time
(Raines was the editor-in-chief of the NY Times during the glory days of Wen Ho Lee and Judith Miller. Before that, he was head of the Times' editorial page when the paper was pushing Whitewater with all its might, and probably did more than anyone else in the media to bring us that "scandal" in all its splendor.)

Dowd is a wonderful exemplar of what it takes for a woman to get a columnist slot at the Times: 1) fuck the boss; 2) turn every column into a torrent of ugly bitchery directed at other women; 3) demonstrate to the boss's satisfaction that, as a silly little female, you're incapable of real substance.

5. Judy Dean, quite a lady.
My little tribute to her for being who she was.

A little tribute to Judy Dean's courage in being who she is.

Ruth Fremson/The New York Times
Dr. Judith Steinberg Dean, right, watching her husband, Howard Dean, at a debate on Nov. 4. With her was Kristen Morgante, a campaign aide.

Most of the time, wearing sensible slipper-flats and no makeup or earrings, Dr. Steinberg can be found in an unadorned medical office she shares with two colleagues in the suburb of Shelburne, where the snapshots under the desk's glass top have not been changed since it belonged to her husband, before he became governor in 1991.

Or she might be puttering around their five-bedroom ranch-style house near Lake Champlain, writing a list of chores — fix the toilet, change the light over the stoop — for Dr. Dean to tackle on his rare days home. Or racing through Hannaford's supermarket in sneakers at 10 p.m., her list of bananas, milk, wheat bran, low-fat fudge bars, aluminum foil, tea bags, Gatorade, lemonade and grapefruit ordered according to aisle location.

"I'm very happy doing what I do," she said. "He's happy doing what he does. I think that he's doing a great job, and I think that he thinks what I do is a great job."

Maureen Dowd was insulting. Dean refused an interview, and then she blasted him for refusing an interview after she had insulted his wife.

6. I hate what she said, but unfortunately, in this Country, the spouse
DOES make a difference. I'm firmly convinced that a lot of people didn't vote for Kerry because of Theresa. I'm sorry to admit, although I detest Rudy's arrogance and playing of 911 for all he can, the other thing I hold against him is his arrogant, I'm better than anyone else, wife, Judy!

On the other side of the same coin, how many people have said how much they like Michelle Obama or Elizabeth Edwards?

Spouses do matter!

If a person votes on a candidate based on how cute his wife dresses, that person had issues.

10. If people HAD voted on how cute the wife dresses
we never would have ended up with GW, would we?

(He never would have gotten enough votes to even get close to stealing 2000)

11. I don't know that anyone voted against a candidate because of the way
his wife DRESSED! When I mentioned Kerry's wife Theresa, the complaints I heard were that she is way too outspoken and would embarrass the Country if she were ever first lady. My problem with Judy is not how she dresses, but that she has said "I want to be a queen"! I don't wnat royalty in this country!

If Laura Bush had been the wife of a Democratic politician, Dowd and her clique would have written endless torrents of snottiness about her dowdy clothes, her weight, her smoking, the fatal accident that killed her ex-boyfriend. We would have been told that American just would not tolerate such an insipid twit with the Thorazine smile.

Dems who think they can escape this trap by voting for the candidate with the spouse who will be "acceptable" to "The American People" haven't been paying attention this last decade. Whoever the Dem spouse is, Maureen and company will find a way to portray her (let's not even think about him!) as too-something or other for the American people to stomach. Too dowdy or too flashy, too quiet or too outspoken, too dog-friendly or too dog-indifferent, too young or too old . . .

Yep, Whoreen is back in full force. And as usual, she gives a pass to her Republican pals. Nice to see Bob Somerby in the Daily Howler go after her and deservedly tear that shrew to pieces. Check out Bob's latest in http://www,dailyhowler.com

This is some sexist crap - and I don't use the term "sexist" easily or often, but this is way over the top. Bite me, Mo.

17. Dowd is as shallow as they come
Of course she would write that about Dr. Steinburg Dean. She wouldn't be comfortable inviting her to one of her parties so the good Dr. is obviously flawed.

Why does Dowd have the job she has?

You sling catty verbal hash and get paid way too much for doing so.

So who's done more with their own life, her or you?

but it just came out wrong. And let's face it, Pickles has set the bar pretty high wrt first lady-ness. :eyes:
