Obama's Relationship With Alleged Fixer

Associated Press Writer

CHICAGO (AP) - Real estate developer and fast-food magnate Antoin "Tony" Rezko spent years pouring thousands of dollars in campaign contributions into Barack Obama's climb from the Illinois legislature to Capitol Hill—and helped him raise tens of thousands more.

But these days Rezko is snared in a nasty political scandal and facing a federal corruption trial that begins next month. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton invoked his name and his "slum landlord business" in a debate with Obama on Monday. A plainly embarrassed Obama has been sending the campaign money to charity in an effort to distance himself from the Chicago businessman, including $41,000 over the weekend.

The Democratic presidential hopeful has also been forced to explain how Rezko got tangled in the purchase of the Obama family home and other ties to Rezko—some of them going back more than 15 years. If federal prosecutors are right, his ties to Rezko may even mean Obama's campaign unwittingly accepted money generated by illegal activities.

1. Piffle.
If they can't get Obama on the dirty house deal, they can't get him on anything.

Clinton rolls a sizable pork barrel

The senator embraces 'earmarks' as a way to help N.Y. She's received campaign funds from project beneficiaries.

By Tom Hamburger and Dan Morain, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers

December 10, 2007

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — It's a real estate developer's sugar-plum dream: a mega-shopping mall complete with 10 Broadway-style theaters, an indoor river, a Tuscan village and a 39-story luxury hotel sheathed in green solar panels shaped like giant blades of grass. Plus as much as $1 billion in government-backed financing, thanks in part to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Not everyone thinks the plan, known as Destiny USA and still in the early bulldozer stage, is a good idea. Many on the Syracuse City Council consider its tax breaks a waste of public money. Others fear it could damage the struggling downtown area. Others question whether all its dazzling features will ever be built.

If federal prosecutors are right, his ties to Rezko may even mean Obama's campaign unwittingly accepted money generated by illegal activities.

Whether the matter will fade in the heat of a national campaign or turn into a headache for Obama in the months ahead is anybody's guess.

State Sen. Christine Radogno, a Republican, said voters are guaranteed to hear more about Rezko if Obama continues to make headway on the campaign trail.

"Obviously, the better he does, the more scrutiny he receives," Radogno said. "So I think there is going to be some discussion of that."

Internship also links Obama, Rezko
Fund-raiser asked senator to hire contributor's son

December 24, 2006
BY FRANK MAIN Staff Reporter
In addition to a land deal, Sen. Barack Obama's ties to indicted dealmaker Antoin "Tony" Rezko include an internship the senator provided the son of a contributor at the request of Rezko, an Obama spokesman confirmed Saturday.

John Aramanda served as an intern for Obama for about a month in 2005, said Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs. His father is Joseph Aramanda, a Rezko business associate who was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in a federal corruption case against Rezko. Aramanda has contributed $11,500 to Obama since 2000, Gibbs said.

"Mr. Rezko did provide a recommendation for John Aramanda," Gibbs said. "I think that it's fairly obvious that a few-week internship is not anything of benefit to Mr. Rezko or any of his businesses."

The internship revelation comes after Obama acknowledged he erred in buying property from Rezko in January. The transaction took place when it was widely known Rezko was under investigation by the U.S. attorney's office.

12. Obama donates $$ " after the Chicago Sun-Times reported on its Web site Saturday"

Obama donates more money from contributors linked to Rezko

January 20, 2008

.............

''Recent public information has called into question contributions to the Obama campaign from a donor and fund-raiser,'' Obama spokesman Bill Burton said. ''It is the policy and practice of the campaign to review all such new information and dispose of questionable funds such as the potential illegal 'straw donations' that campaigns, like other presidential campaigns this cycle, must address as new facts emerge."

The decision to dispose of the money came after the Chicago Sun-Times reported on its Web site Saturday and in today's early edition that Obama is the unnamed ''political candidate'' mentioned in a prosecution document in the Rezko case as having received at least two tainted campaign contributions for his 2004 Senate race. Obama previously gave $44,000 in campaign contributions to charity.

The money his campaign said Saturday would be given away includes three $10,000 contributions from donors the campaign identified as having connections to Rezko: Michel Malek, Craig Morgan and Elie Maloof. Malek is a neurosurgeon who Rezko recommended for appointment to a state board involved with Rezko's alleged wrongdoing.

13. Obama is trying to make this right. He is giving the money back.
Now the Clinton's on the other hand don't care where their money comes from. And, has been known to even give pardons to big contributors.
Actually, Hillary had better watch what she says about others. Her closet isn't clean.
