"By working shoulder-to-shoulder, by taking immediate action, we've delivered and we've made good on our promise to take the necesary measures to ensure that we never see a tragedy like this ever again in Rhode Island," Carcieri said.
The new law, enacted less than five months after the Feb. 20 fire, gives Rhode Island the most stringent fire safety codes in the country and serves as a model for other states, said Sen. John Celona, D-Providence, chairman of the commission that studied the state's existing fire laws and recommended the changes.
"Other states are looking at us now as the guiding light in fire safety," Celona said during a ceremony on the State House steps attended by several victims, their families and firefighters.
