Outsourcing Industry Plays Down Effects From Damaged Cable
February 1, 2008 at 1:10 pm

India’s outsourcing industry is downplaying the effects of a severed cable supplying Internet access to the region as well as much of the Middle East, reports Reuters.

Rajesh Chharia, president of the Internet Service Providers’ Association of India, said Internet services were operating at about 80 percent of capacity Friday and could return to normal levels within a week. He said the companies had backup plans in place to prevent disruption of service.

Meanwhile, BBC News reports an cable 56 kilometers (35 miles) from Dubai also has been damaged, adding to the problems. It says a repair ship has been dispatched and should arrive at the site “in a few days.”

Bloomberg reports most countries are trying to reroute traffic, while repairs to the first cable problem are expected to begin Monday. This PCWorld.com piece delves into the challenges of that rerouting.

Meanwhile, ZDNet blogger Larry Dignan said he found little in a search of the Internet for contingency plans for such an offshoring problem, which suggests companies need to do a lot more planning around that issue.

1. coincidence???
Yeah, it's just a coincidence that IRAN has no internet and cable service. I dread thinking about what's really happening over there. At waynemadsenreport.com they showed that they tried to nuke Iran a few months ago and the military intervened and stopped it. Several officers and soldiers involved have died in mysterious accidents since then.

2. Could India at war save American jobs?
If there is a war, and India's internet access cables are cut, that would cripple the ability to steal jobs from Americans. Those cables are extremely vulnerable to...shall we say, to underwater nukes? That would make a better target than population centers.

This could be very interesting, and perhaps the only world-shaking event in the last eight years that isn't directly caused by Bush.

7. I Hear You...
I Can't Even Get a Vacation Right Now. Too Much Shitty Code to Go Through. I've Heard That Many Companies are Turning Away From Outsourcing. As the Saying Goes: "You Get What You Pay For."

10. They're the only ones who CAN steal our jobs.
They are the only English-speaking nation with a high literacy rate and extremely low wages. Who else could do the job? The British have knowledgable workers and real unions. Australia doesn't have a huge workforce of educated people in a depressed economy. Jamaica might, but Jamaicans are clsoe enough to the US to know if they're being ripped off.

The internet access India has is the reason they, and only they, are economical outsourcers. Blow up the cables and American business will be forced to hire (gasp) Americans.

(I'm not recommending anyone take their nuke and use it for this purpose, by the way. But it would be a very clever way for the terrorists to strike at the American corporations, who (propaganda to the contrary) are the real exploiters of the Middle East and the reason they attacked us.)

11. OK I have to say
I deal with outsourcees in a variety of countries and Indians are among the WORST to understand - their definition of "speaking English" often consists of reading from a script - badly

14. Not a coincidence, and not damaged by ships as reported
"Ships did not cause Internet cable damage
(AFP)

3 February 2008

CAIRO - Damage to undersea Internet cables in the Mediterranean that hit business across the Middle East and South Asia was not caused by ships, Egypt’s communications ministry said on Sunday, ruling out earlier reports.

The transport ministry added that footage recorded by onshore video cameras of the location of the cables showed no maritime traffic in the area when the cables were damaged.

‘The ministry’s maritime transport committee reviewed footage covering the period of 12 hours before and 12 hours after the cables were cut and no ships sailed the area,’ a statement said.

‘The area is also marked on maps as a no-go zone and it is therefore ruled out that the damage to the cables was caused by ships,’ the statement added.

Two cables were damaged earlier this week in the Mediterranean sea and another off the coast of Dubai, causing widespread disruption to Internet and international telephone services in Egypt, Gulf Arab states and South Asia.

A fourth cable linking Qatar to the United Arab Emirates was damaged on Sunday causing yet more disruptions, telecommunication provider Qtel said.

Earlier reports said that the damage had been caused by ships that had been diverted off their usual route because of bad weather.

Egypt’s communication and information technology ministry said it would report its findings to the owners of the two damaged Mediterranean cables, FLAG Telecom and SEA-ME-WE4.

A repair ship was expected to begin work to fix the two Mediterranean cables on Tuesday."
