Displacement behavior can happen when we vent our problems on someone who is not responsible for them.
Thus, a man with an abusive boss may go home and yell at his wife or kick his dog for no reason. We can see this phenomenon in the U.S. media and politicians who often ignore problems happening in this country, but project them on other countries whether they exist there or not.
For instance, we may accept calmly the lone-gunman theory in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, but we cry foul play when we hear Pakistan's official explanation for the murder of Benazir Bhutto.
Perhaps this problem is most dramatic with regard to Venezuelan President Hugo Ch‡vez. We see this trend in a recent syndicated column by Mona Charen, as well as in many other commentaries and reports in the mainstream media. Chavez is regarded as a "would-be dictator," and Charen refers to his "narrow defeat" on a referendum.
