NBC News Exclusive: Political ties to a secretive religious group - Clinton's Ties
Edited on Thu Apr-03-08 10:49 PM by RamboLiberal
-----

In her autobiography, “Living History,” Senator Clinton describes Coe as "a genuinely loving spiritual mentor and guide to anyone, regardless of party or faith, who wants to deepen his or her relationship with God.” She writes that “Doug became a source of strength and friendship" during her often-troubled White House years.

-----

In his preaching, Coe repeatedly urges a personal commitment to Jesus Christ. It’s a commitment Coe compares to the blind devotion that Adolph Hitler demanded from his followers -- a rhetorical technique that now is drawing sharp criticism.

"Hitler, Goebbels and Himmler were three men. Think of the immense power these three men had, these nobodies from nowhere,” Coe said.

Later in the sermon, Coe said: "Jesus said, ‘You have to put me before other people. And you have to put me before yourself.' Hitler, that was the demand to be in the Nazi party. You have to put the Nazi party and its objectives ahead of your own life and ahead of other people."

Coe also quoted Jesus and said: “One of the things said is 'If any man comes to me and does not hate his father, mother, brother, sister, his own life, he can't be a disciple.’ So I don't care what other qualifications you have, if you don't do that you can't be a disciple of Christ."

BTW there's a book coming out on this group. The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power by Jeff Sharlet.

If this hasn't been posted on GDP could someone do the honor. I'm locked out of posting till 2:10am. Thanks.

5. I find her affiliation with this group incredibly cynical
just like her vote for the IWR, her sponsorship of a constitutional amendment prohibiting flag burning, her support of the misguided Loserman bill on Iran, her sucking up to the people who accused her of murdering Vince Foster and many other things.

She really doesn't believe this right wing religious shit, but she (mistakenly) thinks the rest of America does believe it and this is her way of trying to be one of them.

Bill Clinton governed as a republican because he was scared shitless of them. I see no difference in a hillary administration.

Thank god it looks like it ain't gonna happen.

7. I just posted in GD at your suggestion
with first 4 paragraphs of article since it really extends beyond the Clintons and to members of our government.

9. Creepy. But sorry, I just don't see Hillary as that religious,
as far as it impacts any of the policies or issues that are important to me. So a non-issue.

On consideration, there is hardly a religion on the planet or a written scripture which does not teach ridiculously improbable cosmologies; or a teacher or priest who does not at times venture into the realm of the creepy and uncomfortable. Yet religion is a human universal - you would expect us all to be screwed up sock puppets, but we still produce outstanding leaders and outstanding minds.

10. this is`t a religious issue
it`s an issue of power and how it is achieved. these people are the people who obama talked about in his speech.. the people who divide us as a people.
