Siegelman finally contacted by DOJ's Office of Professional Responsibility

EnlargeTUSCALOOSA | The Department of Justice's Office of Professional Responsibility had been charged for some time with getting to the bottom of the many scandals in the Alberto Gonzales DOJ (don't hold your breath), including the allegedly politically-motivated prosecution of former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman.

But I can report today that the OPJ finally contacted Siegelman's attorneys on Monday, although at this point I don't know the extent or nature of that contact.

This comes as The Los Angles Times came out with an article the same day saying the OPJ, which is supposed to be the watchdog for the justice department, has fallen into the typical ways of the Bush administration, becoming more secret and less transparent than ever. It also comes as Karl Rove, whom Siegelman insists was the mastermind behind what he sees as percussion, not prosecution, told the House Judiciary Committee to go take a hike -- that he would not honor its subpoena to testify on Thursday about the Siegelman case and other instances of skulduggery under Gonzales' watch.

The Times reports that the OPR has ceased to issue regular public reports of its investigations, which was the norm under previous administrations, with its last report covering only fiscal year 2005, before Gonzales took office.
