Fool us once, as they say, shame on you. Fool us twice, shame on us. But fool us for a third time? Well, that just might signal the death of the American Mind.
Mr. Bush won the past two presidential elections in Ohio by combining misdirection with deceit. Hot-button issues, such as gay marriage, and outright lies, such as the WMDs, marked the Republican campaign. Their politics of hatred and of phony patriotism managed to distract Ohio from the real issues involved in governing, that is, how to improve all our lives.
As we move toward the election of '08, prepare for more of the same. The neo-conservative hate-machine already is in full smear-mode against Sen. Obama. Meanwhile, the Republicans want us to swallow the biggest whopper to date: that the policies of Mr. Bush -- in Iraq, for our economy -- are working just fine and we should, yet again, stay the Republican course.
