McCain Shows He Just Doesn't Get ItEditor, Times-Dispatch:
On the closing night of the Democrats' National Convention when I heard Barack Obama say John McCain "doesn't get it," I chuckled. The phrase was clever yet clearly an exaggeration. Or was it? With the announcement of McCain's choice for vice president, it became clear that McCain really doesn't get it.
This is a critical time for our nation. Americans deserve the best from both campaigns. That is why I'm disappointed with his choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate. McCain has chosen political strategy over responsibility. On the heels of his accusation that Obama "would rather lose a war in order to win a political campaign," McCain has made a surprising choice. If he wins, a self-titled hockey mom will be a heart beat away from the presidency. A president -- and a vice president -- should be ready to serve on day one.
So why Palin? Does McCain think it is that simple? Disappointed Clinton supporters or not, women across America know better and have more depth than he gives us credit for. The issues come first. Our country comes first. Was this an attempt to one-up the historic events of Obama's nomination? If so, McCain just doesn't get it. Obama earned his place in history. No one merely selected him for the purpose of political gain, symbolic gesture, or dramatic press coverage.
McCain has always appealed to me as a straight-shooter who doesn't play games with the American people. Now I have to ask: Is this what he calls Country First?
