Robert McNamara on war
It’s ironic how the former defense secretary’s views have converged with those of another war hawk turned dove, Daniel Ellsberg, whose publication of The Pentagon Papers contributed to ending the Vietnam War. In an election year, the last thing the Bush White House needed is for the anti-war movement to gain a major voice.

3. As wrong as McNamara was about our prosecution of the war in Vietnam,
he is wise enough to see how, in Barbara Tuchman's words, America betrayed herself in Vietnam, is man enough to acknowledge how wrong he was, is obviously sorrowful and contrite, and is patriotic enough to speak up against a present war he believes is wrong in all respects.
