Krugman: Promises, Promises

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/03/09/opinion/09KRUG.html

Despite a string of dismal employment reports, the administration insists that its economic program, which has relied entirely on tax cuts focused on the affluent, will produce big job gains any day now. Should we believe these promises?

1. A picture is worth a thousand words.
What you see in this chart is the signature of a corrupted policy process, in which political propaganda takes the place of professional analysis.

Kerry should have this as the backdrop for all his major speeches. dw

2. "Economic forecasting isn't an exact science...."
Says Mr. Krugman. What a droll understatement! The more I listen to economists and market analysts talk, the more thoroughly convinced I am that they haven't a clue.

Many of the old constructs, paradigms, theories, equations just don't seem to work any more. Perhaps the global economy has evolved faster than economic theory.

Why else would someone like Alan Greenspan blithely respond to questions regarding the country's employment woes by saying that American workers need "skills."

Unless of course he really did mean to be insulting.

6. Wow, the Busheviks really ARE Free-market Stalinists!
This looks like a graph of "Soviet 5 year Plans" versus reality.

JUST like it.

My God, has America fallen so far! Can we ever get back up again? Can we ever regain our freedom (ok, we are still 98% free, but the missing 2% is that which protects the rest)
