Don't trust the opinion polls (Peter Tatchell / Guardian)
The US presidential election will not be free and fair, because millions of electors will either not be allowed to vote or will not have their votes properly counted. It could cost Barack Obama the White House, even if he wins most of the votes on November 4. This sensational claim is based on research by the New York Times (NYT) and BBC Newsnight, which found that in some states for every new voter registered in the last couple of months, two voters have been removed – negating Obama's massive voter registration drive. This voter purging could mean fewer people voting next month than voted in 2004.

In Colorado, for example, which has seen a significant population increase since the last presidential election, the state has recorded a net loss of nearly 100,000 voters from its rolls since 2004. Louisiana, Michigan and Colorado are deleting registered voters from the rolls within 90 days of a federal election, which is illegal except when voters die, notify the authorities that they have moved out of state, or have been declared unfit to vote ...

Another form of voter exclusion is happening in Michigan, where 62,000 lower income families, mostly Democrat supporters, face losing their homes to foreclosure. Loss of residence means losing their voting address and their right to vote. Many of the evictions are being orchestrated by a foreclosure company that supports the Republican party ...

"If Democrats are to win the 2008 election," Kennedy and Palast conclude, "they must not simply beat John McCain at the polls – they must beat him by a margin that exceeds the level of GOP .. vote tampering."

1. You know why I don't buy this story?
Because I didn't hear anything about it from any Obama official or from Obama himself.

Do you really think if such massive purge had occured Obama would ignore it?

3. Obama has amassed a team of 5,000 lawyers to protect voting rights.
This story is true.

8. Lawyers can't stop the voting rolls from being purged.
Nor can they stop electronic machines from "mis-counting" votes. I'm glad Obama has that team, but I fail to see what they can really do.

We need hand-counted paper ballots for all federal elections before 2010. It works in Canada.

6. The myths of Cassandra and Jonah tell of complementary curses: in the case of Cassandra,
her prophecies were never believed and always came true, while in the case of Jonah, his prophecy was believed and therefore did not come to pass

Two weeks before the election is not really the time for anyone to try to educate you about the last eight years of Republican behavior: the story has been scattered in bits across standard news sources for quite a while, and if you are interested to learn something about it, you can start (say) by following links in the Election Reform forum here. You might read about the millions of votes not counted in 2000 and again in 2004, or about the Republican strategy (announced months before the 2004 election) to slow voting in Democratic precincts in Ohio, where on election day people waited in lines for many hours to vote, or about the "Rob Georgia" file or the voting machines that curiously counted backwards

Such issues have concerned quite a few people here for many years. But the election is at hand. Today, what is important is not to become complacent and over-confident, but rather to begin a renewed push towards the first Tuesday in November

9. It HAS occurred,
and it CONTINUES to occur, in many States.

See Rachel's interview with Bobby Kennedy, and read Rolling Stone.

7. k&r for a useful reminder.
We need hand-counted paper ballots for all federal elections by 2010 and national, social-security number-based registration that is independently monitored.
