Send Bill Clinton to the Senate
By Karl E. Meyer and Shareen Blair Brysac
Wednesday, November 26, 2008; Page A13

Amid the blizzard of résumés blanketing Washington as the Obama era dawns, there is a superbly qualified candidate for full employment whose name has been overlooked. We refer, of course, to William Jefferson Clinton, America's 42nd chief executive and commander in chief. Yet now, by a wonderful combination of circumstances, comes an opportunity to harness his unquestioned political talents to benefit his country, the Democratic Party, New York state and his spouse. If, as is expected, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton becomes secretary of state, New York Gov. David Paterson could send her husband to the U.S. Senate.

1. Geez! Please no!
We had plenty of good democrats before the Clintons moved into the state. Get off the slide and give someone else a chance!

3. Why do you hate New York?
Do they really need a carpet bagger that will spend his time touring the world instead of representing the state?

4. I think this is a great idea
the only reason to say no, is that he would be a bigger help as a special envoy to the Middle East. I think it would be great to give him a second shot at resolving the Israel/Palastinian conflict.

7. How about a new rule - NY gets to elect an actual NYer for Senate, and rest of the country butts out

12. Most NYers don't give a damn about that. It's one of the greatest states in the World...

they don't need that kind of affirmation.

Where do you live upstate? I've got friends in Buffalo and Utica-the Emerald of the Mohawk River Valley.

And the choice of replacement is a very tough one.

A run-off election would be better.

13. Mookie, with all respect, you are wrong on this one
I have relatives and friends all over the state - NYC, Long Island, upstate near Buffalo and Syracuse, also near Albany. I've spoken with about half of these folks about Bill being put in her Senate seat, and no one, liberal and conservative alike, likes the idea. We have plenty of good dems who need a place to move up - let's let the state party get on with that, please.

Bobby Kennedy got elected and so did Hillary Clinton.

James Buckley also wasn't a native. The Buckleys were from SC.

15. There are plenty of good experienced NY Congressmen and state officials

Tell me why Bill Clinton would be better for NY than one of our two dozen Dem. Congressmen or our Attorney General.

17. Didn't say he was. The point of the article is that politically, it's a tough choice for the Gov...
because no matter who he picks he would tick off other groups that want to be represented.

They should just have a run-off election as the best solution.
