Spinning the Past, Threatening the Future
Political aphorisms don't get any more cogent: "Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past."

George Orwell's famous observation goes a long way toward explaining why -- a full year after the invasion of Iraq -- the media battles over prewar lies are so ferocious in the United States. Top administration officials are going all out to airbrush yesterday's deceptions on behalf of today's. And tomorrow's.

1. Why people (like presidents) believe weird things (like WMDs in Iraq)
Solomon writes that the American mass media will not seriously pursue "the possibility that the lot of them -- Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice and, yes, Powell -- were, in their pursuit of war on Iraq, significantly deranged." But thinking such thoughts is becoming almost inescapable.

A folie en masse -- a group delusion -- involving these significant people is the only thing that makes sense. Clearly, something in the deliberative process broke down. I am not being sarcastic when I say the most appropriate information feedback models are those that have been done for the Salem witchcraft frenzy. Take a look for yourself. One easy-reading work is "Why People Believe Weird Things."
