• 1999 -- Getting a jump on the impending corporate bonanza, Neil Bush, brother of George W. Bush, founded Ignite! Learning, Inc., an educational software and hardware company.

• July 2003 -- Houston School Superintendent Rod Paige was given credit for reforming Houston schools, which were dubbed the "Texas Miracle," and served as the model for NCLB.

Later Bush named Paige as secretary of education. But scandal erupted when assistant principal Robert Kimball blew the whistle. Houston schools were inaccurately reporting their drop-out rate, test scores, violent crimes, and number of college bound students.

• February 2004 -- At a White House meeting with the nation's governors, then-Education Secretary Rod Paige called the National Education Association a "terrorist organization," thereby setting the tone for Bush-style education reform and offending classroom teachers nationwide.
