Rick Warren Gets Tepid Response
By Liza Porteus Viana

About, oh, maybe 10 people eventually clapped when Rev. Rick Warren was introduced to give the invocation during Barack Obama's inauguration today. It did seem, however, that he got more claps than former President Bush.

The founder and senior pastor of the Saddleback Church in Orange County, CA, no doubt took the podium with at least a little trepidation, given the outcry over his selection by the gay community. Even though the Warren dustup wasted several days' worth of headlines after Obama announced his selection, it appears now no one cares too much and people just want to revel in the moment.

A new Gallup Poll just out shows that most Americans either approve of Warren giving the invocation or don't even know he was doing so, while just 9 percent disapprove of Warren's role. Even among liberals, support for Obama's choice far outweighs disapproval, 39 percent to 16 percent. Among Democrats, there is 37 percent approval compared to 10 percent disapproval. Among liberals, the numbers are similar with 39% approving and 16% disapproving. Approval is obviously higher among Republicans and conservatives.

In fact, Warren just prayed. He wasn't trying to convert anybody or espouse any perceived "anti-gay" message. In fact, as he prayed, you saw people with hands outstretched, crying. They were taken with the moment. It was a testament to Obama's inclusion of people of all views.

4. Was hoping someone would throw a cowboy hat on him and he'd
break into American Pie...

Seriously, though, thank God/Goddess/Cabbage Patch Dolls or whoever... for Dr.Joseph Lowery. Love him! He was the right choice. Warren? meh...

6. "Hay-soos"
I was a little appalled by his "pandering" with regard to "Jesus" and his "cute" Spanish pronunciation of "Jesus" which seemed a little odd but then his invocation was a little odd. But then he is a little odd.

Unless you're a fundamentalist. In which case you probably sent the Democratic Party a check as well as sending a check to Saddleback Church. It was a mistake to have invited him. In the end, he exposed himself to the nation for what he is. Just another pandering preacher passing the hat so to to speak. "Hay-soos" indeed.

8. No kidding
Warren was an easy act to follow. Would have been much more difficult to follow Joseph Lowrey.

They saved the best for last, so to speak.

9. You should have heard the "aw jeez" moues that went through the room when he
said "Jesus, who changed my life..." or whatever it was. If they were in accord with my thoughts, then they were all thinking: "Yeah, right...it's all about YOU!" What a gimp. He's not even an engaging public speaker. That was high-school level stuff. And people actually take time out of their week to listen to this guy drone on? Have they no standards?

10. It wasn't much of a prayer, I must say.
His invocation of Jesus scuttled any idea that he would be "non-denominational". Like you say, all about him.

13. I thought he did that rather cleverly
I can't remember his exact words but he distinctly used first person singular in trotting out the mandatory-for-fundamentalists "in Jesus' name" line. He managed to make it a "valid" fundy prayer without implying that everyone present shared his faith.

I can't stand the guy and his flavor of religion, but he's not stupid. (Which is what makes him dangerous, of course.)

11. The poll was taken before the event
And even at the link it does not explain the numbers.
I went to the link after your link to Gallup. And there this fact emerges:

"Fifty-two percent of Americans say they don't know enough about the decision to have an opinion either way."

That tid bit changes the perspective a tad. No wonder you left it out.
