Gallup poll on most/least religious states
**********

"PRINCETON, NJ -- An analysis of more than 350,000 interviews conducted by Gallup in 2008 finds Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Arkansas to be the most religious states in the nation. Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts are the least religious states."

http://www.gallup.com/poll/114022/State-States-Importance-Religion.aspx

**********

Results almost mimic the political leanings of the states.

Alaska is interesting...among the least religious states, the only "red" state in the top 10.

North Carolina is the only "blue" state in the top 10 most religious states.

3. God will be listening to your answer
...to the pollster's question.

I am sure that a good number of the 65% positive group are embarassed by the dogma, hypocrisy, and self-interest demonstrated by organized religion.

9. Would like to see another question answered...

There are a lot of people for whom religion is more about personal renewal than dogma. Buddhists come to mind. But even many Christians/Muslims/Jews/Hindus are in this category.

So religion can be important in many people's lives, but yet not affect their perception of ground reality.

The question I really want to see answered is this: "Do you think a higher power is responsible (either fully or partly) for the events in our lives and/or the actions we take?"

6. Makes sense to me...
the same people who are uneducated and who have been taught by religious leaders and their blind followers to not think for themselves have are also duped by manipulative politicians. Those who have been educated about the world and who CAN think for themselves are not so easily fooled by religion or politicians.

7. So the Bible Belt is the Bible Belt, judging from the map
so why didn't they tell us something we didn't know? Of course, like most polls you would have seen somewhat different numbers if they had asked the question differently.

What if, instead of asking "Is religion an important part of your daily life?" they replaced the word religion with spirituality... or what if they had replaced religion with "organized religion."

Just curious.

8. It would be interesting to see a breakdown of that 65%.
My "religion" (for lack of a better word) is a huge part of my daily life, and I'm not a Christian.

10. Define "religious"
If religious means "born-again fanatics who want to cram their dogma down the throats of everyone else and force the government to favor their religious beliefs only," then count me out.

If religious means believing in a Creator and giving thanks and trying to help others and trying to live one's beliefs quietly without fanfare and trying to share one's blessings, then I hope I'm religious.

11. And the states with the highest teen birth rate happen to be states like
Edited on Thu Jan-29-09 01:52 PM by bulloney
Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, Louisiana and Arkansas, with Mississippi being the highest (CDC report).

States like Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts have the lowest.

South Carolina ranked first in violent crimes (FBI, 2006).

Just sayin...
