Mrs. Cheney: 'Sisters' Gets Outed
Cheney: 'Sisters' Gets Outed

NewsweekApril 5 issue - In 1981, long before her husband was elected vice president, Lynne Cheney wrote "Sisters," a steamy bodice-ripper set in the 19th-century American West, featuring vivid tales of whorehouses, attempted rapes, a suspicious murder and several lesbian love affairs, of which Cheney writes approvingly. The paperback, published in Canada, has been out of print for nearly two decades.

But on April 6 the book is scheduled to be released for the first time in the United States. Many of the novel's most lurid details have already been unearthed on the Internet and by gay-rights activists, who believe Cheney's treatment of lesbian relationships in the book is at odds with the Bush administration's stance against gay marriage. (Cheney's been silent about gay marriage, although her daughter Mary is openly gay.) For example, in the book a woman says of her female lover: "How well her words describe our love—or the way it would be if we could remove all impediments, leave this place and join together. Then our union would be complete. Our lives would flow together, twin streams merging into a single river."

A Cheney spokesperson says the reissue came as a surprise to the Second Lady. Cheney told The Washington Post in October 2000: "The reports of my novel are greatly exaggerated. Nevertheless, I hope they improve sales."

1. Message for MARY CHENEY - MARY CHENEY - Where are you????
Vice President Cheney, your father, recently said he would support adding anti-gay prejudice to the US Constitution, making
you and millions of other Americans second-class citizens. As an open lesbian who has worked for years as a public advocate
for gay civil rights, you are in a unique position to defend yourself and your community in this dire hour. Won't you join us in
publicly opposing this bigoted un-American proposal?

2. Lynne Cheney's frends in the Traditional Values Coalition will no doubt be
voicing their outrage. Look for negative reviews by Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, James Dobson, and James Kennedy. Right. And watch out for those flying pigs also.

3. In other words, when Lynne wrote that she was a Real Human Being
Now she is an Imperial Monster and Bushevik Bootlicker.

The Lynne Cheney of today has as much bearing on that Lynne, as Adolf Eichmann after joining the Nazis had to his Youthful Self.

4. their daughter too
And let's not forget Cheney's daughter Mary, who is openly lesbian and conspicuously silent on the issue. Looking forward to seeing this novel hit the stands.

6. thanks
Thanks. :) I actually found out about DU on freerepublic. It's insightful, yet very very frightening, to spend some time over there. I figured that if those guys hate DU that much, there must be something good happening over here.

7. I'm sure all the book burners/book banners
will give this one a pass to remain in the libraries as it represents a "fantastic and realistic look at our history and the American West"
