Join army, be a US citizen in 6 months
15 Feb 2009, 1130 hrs IST, Chidanand Rajghatta , PTI

WASHINGTON: For decades, high-skilled professionals from across the world, particularly India, have fought their way to US citizenship through legal immigration channels — a process that can take up to a decade or more. Now, Uncle Sam is making it easy. Fight your way — literally — to American citizenship in as little as six months.

In a far reaching proposal, the US military will open its doors to skilled immigrant guest workers (such as those who hold H-1B visas) who have lived in the US for a minimum of two years. The move is aimed at offsetting the poor recruitment intake from traditional sources at a time the US military is stretched thin by deployments in Iraq and the Af-Pak theater.

US Green card holders, also known as permanent residents, have long been eligible to enlist in the military. But this is the first time since the Vietnam War that the armed forces will be open to temporary immigrants and offer them a path to citizenship, a move that in some ways amounts to outsourcing its wars.

The program comes at a time when skilled immigrants in the US are facing a slowing job market, offering them an avenue to turn potential pink slips into not just Green cards, but citizenship — if they are so obsessed about their American Dream.

2. Why not? If they're getting free education and better health care than the rest of us, why not?
For the global economy.

It's just all one big damn mess. No oversight. We'd rather piss on our own, apparently.

The real joke will be how many people don't sign up. Or, perhaps, do...?

Dunno. One day at a time. Focus on what we can do, and that's why I'm going back to further my degree.

3. Truth is, it used to be insanely onerous for people from the Phillipines, many of whom
joined the Navy and got deployed, consequently being unable to fulfill the "time in country" requirement, to become citizens.

It took forever to sort that out at the Department of State level.

This, though, is several steps beyond that business. This is like the Vietnam-era recruiting procedures.

4. Just like the Romans did with the barbarians
and the Empire collapsed a shortly afterwords.

Yep, the Roman's, due to lack of Citizens, enlisted the people they had previously conquered to serve in the legions with promises of citizenship and other wondrous things. And that worked out so well for Roman stability. And you can point out the Roman Empire on a map in 2009 where exactly? Yeah, exactly my point...

I am not totally in agreement about this. Yes the WESTERN ROMAN EMPIRE was going down, but the Romans had enlisted barbarians a long time before it got to hard to defend the romans from the barbarians.. And it was many things who was in place long before the western roman empire of 476 was falling who made it possible. Not just that it was not enough Citizens to put into the legions. But also that in the 280s, and later a deadly plague, most known as the Black Death had decimated most roman city's and the whole economy was more or less in ruin.. And for the records, the 280 to 330s and later, the roman citizenry could not possible see the difference between the barbarians, and the civilized romans who was plundering them alike. When the tax base who the government had to survive on was going down, the taxes was raised, and for the most part they had to leave both farm and the life they once had, for the insecurity of city life - or worse if it doesn't worked out in gangs to plunderer what came their way..

An another reason that the Western Roman Empire failed, is because of of the people was not used to military experience.. In the Republic it had been important to have military experience, in many cases if you wanted public office, and doesn't had the luxury of money, a lot of it it says, then the army was the way to go. Even that you might never bee the next great general, you could at least get yourself a decent life, and if you had good friends in high places, even some good connection you later could use if you wanted public office. After the Empire of Augustus, the idea of military duty for ALL was fading fast.. And the next emperors was afraid of citizens marching to Rom by arms, so they at best tried to please the plebes, who was being dinned, and pampered with. The plebes of Rom was maybe the most spoiled people in the ancient world, with all type of entertainment to hold them content.. And in any cases the ARMY was been profession all the time.. Less Citizens, and more professionals, who made it possible to hold the legions at a low rate compared to who big the empire indeed was.. But also that most of the Empire never exactly was seeing a soldiers, if they was not in the border area then.. The legions was put in the border area, where they pretty effective for a long, long time managed to stop every barbarians with a bad idea of what to do inside the Empire. Many of the legion camps, over time came City's or trading post where barbarians and romans could trade what they had. And in the proses many barbarians was also getting knowledge of many things the romans know. Not just the roman legions, but also luxury items was traded between the romans and the barbarians.. As long as in South Denmark, they have find lot of luxury items, who clearly is influenced or from the Roman provinces connecting the barbarians and romans with a large trade network who criss crossed not just the Roman world, but also the barbaric world. SO trade was indeed a important factor of knowledge of the roman empire long before the first barbarian decided that they wanted luxury items, more than they wanted to trade or pay for it.. But from the 280s and forward the whole germanic world was in turmoil. New people who wanted land was pushing the others forward them - and at first the roman limits was holding, and the roman soldiers was a big enough force to reckon with, so the barbarians was thrown back over the lines.. But in the 390s, and 400s the whole concept was falling apart, and as more of the Roman legions was barbarized, because most of the soldiers was after all of germanic origin (the name Germany are in part a holdover from what the area the romans was calling Germanic, and had no resentments with the Nazi-idea of Germanic ideas... Just for the record) Then the whole idea of who they wanted to help, their kinds men on the other side, or their commanders came into play.. And in many cases, to many cases the legions was given way for their kinds men on the other side. And in the flood way who followed one province after another was taken over by the barbarians..

And another, the Roman Empire as such doesn't stopped exist in 476, rather the barbarians, officially was made king, by the Eastern Roman Emperor. And protector of the Western Roman Empire. and the whole Roman World was not exactly dead as a idea. It was just "cloaked" in other ideas.. The whole way to 1806 when Napoleon Bonaparte was abdicating the last Holly Roman Emperor of the Germans, the idea of an unified western roman empire was there. Charlemagne was maybe the last western european to ever came that far as making most of the old, and much of the "Germania" a Roman Empire.. Even that many after him tried it was no power again for t. And the history was changing and the national states who was made out of all the tribes who had entered the former roman provinces would never accept a sovern Emperor to rule as before. But in the end the Western Roman world, was ended, when the last roman emperor, had abdicated - he was a young man, almost a boy and just a puppet for his family by the way, and was not murdered or something like that, but rather given a pension, and told to leave for a better place.. And he kind of walked out of the history, no one know what happened to him in the end.. But our sources doesn't tell if he was killed, si I guess he and his family was living peacefully all their life.. And that the barbarians respected and made them safe.. In practice, the last 7 or so roman emperors had just ben weak minded, and often people who was more busy with their hobbies than to rule a empire. And who was put into this high office more because other wanted it, than that THEY wanted to be Emperors.. The future of the roman world, was in the East, who in most of the middle ages was a light in a pretty dark place. Where education, where the old knowledge to a high degree was been put forward, and where in many cases the clings of Europe was holding when the barbarians was getting restless and was hammering hard on the doors of Constantinople.. Constantinople existed as an empire in more than 1000 year AFTER the last roman emperor abdicated to the barbarians in 476.

I've missed seeing you around. I hope you visit more often, or at least check in once in a while.

I'm still working, barely. My job is hanging by a thread and my boss recently told me that layoffs are coming and that I should sending out resumes. There are just no jobs out there. Luckily, I still have my home, but worry about what will happen to me and my kids if I do lose my job soon. Plus, one of my kids has a chronic illness and needs health care. I try not to worry too much now or else I'll go crazy.

How have you been? Are you still working? I hope all is well with you.

Bush really did a job on the US in those 8 years, it's sad.

Keep in touch, my friend.

I have been around, when time allow it, at moment it is 6 in the morning where I am, and I am just waiting for the time when I know my doctor are in office.. Don't feel to well, and haven't for the last 3 weeks.. Have had the flue, but that is over, but still not good.. So I guess I have to go to the doctor to a little check up here. Haven't been real sick for 10 year now, so I guess everything came at the same time.. I am afraid I have pneumonia, because when I host it hurt down there and it is not been better for almost two weeks now.. But I am surviving somewhat.. Going down in waith also, because I had no taste for food lately, And I am usually a man who eat at least 3 meal a day....not that this is somewhat wrong, because with 100kg I was beginning to be little "big" at 1.79 in hight. So here is something wrong, and I guess I have to make the visit I do not like, to the doctor..Thankfully we have universal health care here in Norway, so I do not hope it will cost to much when it come to medicine an the lot.. If I get the medicine I believe I need at blue receipt, it is very good, because then I am just paying for a little sum of it, the rest is taken by the social security (trygdeetaten). My sister once told me that I am pretty like my old grandfather, who also never got to a doctor - if he was not really sick... So I guess it goes little in the genes this hings:evilgrin:

Good that you are still working, what the little I know about how things are in the states it doesn't look good at all.. Thousands is just living by the thread, and at the look at things, it doesn't look like it will picking up anytime soon either.. So I hope you are not fired, and can work where you are now;).

Sorry to hear about your children, this is not good to have a illness who need medical help, specially when it came to chronically illness.. Hope the kid is in good hand, and that the illness is not killing you in the progress.. I know it can be hard to be ill in your country.. You should try to emigrate to Norway if you have the means, we might be help some. Even that our bureaucracy can be little hard to overcame (I know by experience) I hope you, and your family is hanging in there, and is doing the best you can to make it true this horrible hard times you are in:pals:

Yes mr Bush did a job with the US.. As he have been doing to much everything he ever touched in his whole life.. I for one can not for my life understand why this man is not arrested and put into a 4x4 cell, whereby every prospect of his administration is under scrutiny, and where hi, and the rest of the administration are not been find guilty of crimes..
And that most of the big business who have reaped plundered and stealing the US blind have not given a clear message, pay back or lose everything you have - in many cases even your freedom.. Then the US Treasury at least would have got a pretty big surplus to pay for this "stimulus package" the Congress have made.. I for one fear that most of it, would end nowhere you who need it, but rather in the hand of them who really have no need of them - and then off to cayman Island and some offshore banks...

But I can be wrong, maybe the thief's suddenly have a change of hearth, and will play by the rules and give back to the same people the was allowed to plunderer for the last 8 year?...

Keep in touch, hope you, and your family is safe and secure:hug:

I'm so sorry to hear that you've been ill for a while now. I hope that you can get in to see the doctor soon. You don't want to let pneumonia go on for too long, without treatment. You have to force yourself to eat too and remember to drink plenty of fluids. Wow....10 years without being really sick? You must have a good immune system. I got so run down within the past year that I came down with mononucleosis. That wiped me out for many months. You're very lucky to have universal health care. I really wish we had that here. I spent $20,000 last year while "having" health insurance. Is that crazy, or what? That's not counting what my insurance premiums cost per month. It just seems like a crime to me that it should cost that much. Someone's pockets are getting lined.

Here in Ohio, so many people are hurting. So many homes being foreclosed on, jobs lost and shelters full. I've never seen times this bad in my life. It's frightening. I hope to keep my job, but if not, to at least get side jobs. My sick kid still needs that expensive health care, though. Some days are just truly depressing. I don't expect things to get better anytime soon. I just try to do my best. It's all that I can do.

I too, am surprised that bush and his corporate friends are getting away with all they have done wrong. He should be in a cell, like you said. I don't have much faith in this stimulus bill. I agree with you again...it'll end up in offshore accounts and not help those people who need it most. I have little faith that those thieves have had a change of heart. I fear for our future, as well as the future of those all around the world. Times are tough everywhere.

Norway sounds nice. I used to know someone who lived there. He was very happy there. I'd be thrilled to hear more about Norway once you're feeling better.

You're in my thoughts and prayers for a quick recovery from your illness. Send me a PM after you see the doctor and let me know what he says and how you are. Don't be a stranger. :)
