Greider: Be Willing To Destabilize The Party
Greider: Be Willing To Destabilize The Party
http://www.ourfuture.org/blog-entry/2009041617/greider-be-willing-destabilize-party

Journalist and author William Greider is urging the labor movement and other progressives to get tough with the Democratic Party, even if that means putting the party’s majority control in the House and Senate at risk.

Greider, who was at the AFL-CIO headquarters in Washington Thursday to discuss his latest book, “Come Home America,” said that groups that have reliably supported Democrats over the years needed to more aggressively counter the ability of conservatives within the party to “blow the whistle” against reforms that working people are fighting to gain. In saying that, he bolsters the case of progressives who have argued that they must act as an independent force that alternately cooperates with and challenges Democrats, including President Obama.

Greider said that progressives should respond to those southern Blue Dogs and other conservatives by telling the party, “We are going to their districts and talk about what they’re for and what they’re against. Are they for whacking Social Security or aren’t they? Let’s put it on the table. Let’s have an honest debate about that. If that makes people nervous, that’s good.”

1. A possibility: Republican party disappears. Dems split into two parties.
This has a 50/50 probability outcome at this time.

2. Not bad
The DLC and Blue Dogs come out of the closet and become the republican they are and the Progressives and Liberals actually get a Party of their own

4. More Likely the Dems Split and the Repiggies Take over for Another Generation
Nothing would energize the Repiglickin party more than having the Democrats split.

5. First thing: campaign finance reform
This is a big material reason for lousy populist representation, skewed debate and agendas. This means you will always have a fascist stronghold for corporate elites and everyone else, good or bad fighting among themselves uselessly, absurdly and off the point.

Big Labor, once they finally had achieved some measure of the material advantages have been divided as well- by the money and power game devolving from the top, dancing the lobster quadrille with Democrats corrupted by the political success of getting too close to the lords of money. Suddenly, with no regard to a simple main problem Labor finds itself "prudently" supporting republicans and Blue Dogs here and there for specific favors but general ruin.

This proposal, seemingly wise, is another war that immediately skirts the problem. Looking at parties in other nations there is no guarantee of anything but another minor seat at the table for a more "pure" progressive party if the major domination and untouchability of the oligarch's money god continues. If the chicken or egg argument arises about getting the parties first, reform later, at least recognize its groaning wasteful, risky and backward nature in an era of continued physical crises.

Splitting the Dems? They still have not gotten started, got fair press or election counting. Kind of premature but the pressure, the intense pressure for reform is not. Throwing in the towel and talking about splitting the party seems just like another more foxy teabag ploy or one so stupid it might as well be.

10. Yeah, but look what we've won
Different day, same old tune. Maybe it's time to risk it.

6. the other outcome: Dems jerk people around so much, GOP has chance to regroup...
come back stronger, more fascist, and give up even the pretense of Democracy once they regain the reins of power.

If Democrats remain timid and half-sold out, they will hardly drive people to the polls at the next election. Instead, they will hope for their voters to be slightly less apathetic and alienated from them than the Republicans.
