It’s over. The first blood-spattered anarchic anniversary of Saddam Hussein’s metaphorical, much-televised toppling from on-high in Baghdad . Europe – new and old – is united in a black mood of gallows humour and gormless horror. Cut to Britain ’s particular brand of black humour and Iraq ’s former information minister, ‘Comical Ali’ Mohammed Saeed Al Sahaf blooms once again on the front-pages, albeit as a cartoon. Standing alongside US defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld, al-Sahaf’s hilarious defiance is re-lived just days before Baghdad fell. “We are still in full control”, he intones, even as American tanks are visible rolling into the city and onto the world’s television screens right behind him. Now, in wry vein Rumsfeld is caricatured saying the same thing, with black smoke billowing in the background from a thousand Iraqi bonfires of “white assets”. The cartoon reads: "Spot the difference".


The two principals of this neo-imperialist riot – George Bush and Tony Blair – are to meet and manoeuvre in five day’s time (Friday, April 16). Meanwhile, all around them crumbles the coalition of the European willing. Here’s how they stack up, in the face of arguably the biggest break-down in trust between the white man and the wog since Jallianwala Bagh....
