Rice's defense of Bush contained yawning gaps
If this is what it means to have our first MBA president, please, let's go back to mere mortal lawyers in the Oval Office.

Condoleezza Rice did an admirable job of defending the president in her outing before the 9/11 commission on Thursday. At least as best as she could, given the set of facts before her.

Unfortunately, despite her considerable skills, even she can't make silk out of sows' ears. She painted a vivid picture of a president who, she says, had an intense sense of urgency but his response was to, well, not do much.

Yes, her intent was to convince us of the direct opposite.

She says everyone was on high alert and at the ready in anticipation of a terrorist strike. OK, but this urgency wasn't transmitted effectively to some key agency heads who have spoken to the commission.

She says the FBI and all its agents in all its field offices were directly on task in relation to the threat spike, and yet one commissioner said they could find no documents to support that the agents knew they were supposed to be on task. Task, what task?
