The Media Doesn't Get That Hyping Potent Pot Makes More People Want to Smoke It

By Paul Armentano, NORML. Posted May 16, 2009.

The govt. "warns" us that our pot is stronger than anything Jerry Garcia ever smoked in his heyday. What do they expect?

"This ain't your grandfather's or your father's marijuana. This will hurt you. This will addict you. This will kill you."- Mark R. Trouville, DEA Miami, speaking to the Associated Press (June 22, 2007)

Government claims that today's pot is more potent, and thus more dangerous to health, than ever before must be taken with a grain of salt.

Federal officials have made similarly dire assertions before. In a 2004 Reuters News Wire story, government officials alleged, "Pot is no longer the gentle weed of the 1960s and may pose a greater threat than cocaine or even heroin." (Anti-drug officials failed to explain why, if previous decades' pot was so "gentle" and innocuous, police still arrested you for it.)

In 2007, Reuters again highlighted the alleged record rise in cannabis potency, proclaiming, "U.S. marijuana grows stronger than before: report." Quoted in the news story was ex-Drug Czar John Walters, who warned, "This report underscores that we are no longer talking about the drug of the 1960s and 1970s -- this is Pot 2.0." ..........(more)

1. Agreater threat than cocaine or even heroin?
That would be laughable if not so very very wrong and if people weren't going to jail for it.

4. What the report said
The report said the 'average' potency of pot (which is pot confiscated by the police) has gone up. Which may just indicate that there is less poor quality marijuana being grown. They always go back to the 'stronger than what they had in the '60's line'. In the '60s (read up to about 72 or 73) we had Mexican dirt weed (low quality), Columbian (not too bad) and occasionally some Thai stick (good). In the mid-70's growers started experimenting and learned that by not letting the female plant get pollinated you could push up the amount of THC produced. For the next lets say 10 years they perfected this method and produced what is known as sinsemilla (sp?) which is the high quality stuff people like to smoke today. So what we have is the equivalent of somebody saying shortly after human beings figured out how to distill hard liquor, 'Hey this stuff is a lot stronger than that ale your parents used to drink'. As somebody pointed out you just smoke less but in the message its 'stronger' is the idea of 'well yeah we lied to you about the effects of that stuff that was smoked back in the '60's. It wasn't really all that bad but woah this new stuff it's...it's...it's REALLY STRONG!
You know what that means it means its means that all that stuff we lied about is even worse.'

Give me a break the government and anti-drug crowd has been lying about the effects of pot smoking since Harry Anslinger came along. I've smoked the dirt weed and I've smoked some of the best yes you might get a little higher but the basic effect is the same. By the way do you know where I can get any Doritos.

7. Come to think of it, I haven't seen his horse Mescalito in years, either...

Panama Red, Panama Red
He'll steal your woman, then he'll rob your head
Panama Red, Panama Red
On his white horse, Mescalito
He come breezin' through town
I'll bet your woman's up in bed with
Panama Red

The judge don't know when Red's in town
He keeps well hidden underground
But everybody's acting lazy
Falling out and hangin' 'round

My woman said, "Hey Pedro
you're actin' crazy like a clown"
Nobody feels like working
Panama Red is back in town

Everybody's looking out for him
'Cause they know Red's satisfies
Little girls love to listen to him
Sing and tell sweet lies

But when things get too confusing, honey
You're better off in bed
And I'll be searching all the joints in town for
Panama Red

6. Best I ever had was some Thai stick around '82 or so.
I've lived in CA and I've had the pleasure to smoke some cannabis cup stuff since. It was good, but nothing like that Thai.

Apples and oranges, they are comparing the indica varieties popular today with the old Mexican sativa.

I kinda miss sativa, you could still get stuff done whilst smoking it. :) (sigh)

8. Maui
Even though I grew up in Northern California so I was right in the middle of where they were (and are) growing the good stuff the best I ever had was some Maui Wowie. Took a couple of bong hits at about 10 in the morning next thing I knew I woke up with my friends laughing at me. That is one thing with pot and the idea that more powerful pot is going to have such 'bad' effects. At some point if you get stoned enough you tend to just crash out (and no I don't mean pass out you just go to sleep).
