In case you missed it, the “ticking time bomb” scenario seemingly borrowed from the fictional Fox television show “24” was all but itself exploded last week when it was pointed out that the waterboarding of high level terrorists did not in fact achieve immediate results — unless you consider inflicting more than 80 such treatments over the period of a month and then getting him to tell you the lie you want to hear “immediate.”
Or if you think such time bombs tick-tocking for more than a week, the time authorized to keep a terrorist suspect from sleeping in order to “break” him, gets similarly “immediate” results.
As for Obama’s shift in emphasis away from the Bush years, a shift that is already paying dividends on the world stage where the United States is beginning to regain the moral high ground, only time will tell if a government based on solving problems and abating threats through diplomacy is more effective than one shoots firsts and asks questions later.
And finally, speaking of time, Cheney’s claim that his administration kept us safe for seven and a half years is not only off by a couple of months — the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, came nearly eight, not six, months into Bush’s eight years in office — it also attempts to hide the fact that the largest attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor occurred at a time in which Bush and Cheney had been in office for nearly 20 percent of their first term ...
